about how good should someone be who has been playing for about 8 months?
It's hard too say. If you have already been playing a different instrument in the past you can learn quick. But I would say, at 8 months, you should be capable of playing most of the stuff on alternative radio stations.

Keep at it..

Hey, I just wanted to say to all the new guitar players, Keep at it. Its pretty boring at first when you can't play any songs, but once you get to know stuff you'll probably do what I did. Come home from school and run to get on your guitar. LoL...

Hint: If you wan't to do a lot of tab work, practice the Penatonic Scale the most. That will get your left hand used to where each string falls under your fingers, and your right hand used to picking the string you need to pick...

Once you get all that down you'll be able to pick up any tab, look at it for a second, figure out the easiest way to get your fingers into position to progress through the piece, and perform it

That's good advice.

I also suggest that younger players play some ska. More experienced guitar players often look down on ska but the strumming skills involved are tough for begginners and it's a great way to improve your strumming while having fun. Because it's ska.

Smile

I've only been playing guitar for about 9 months. I've played the violin for 5 years in school. But somehow I feel like I've equal in musical ability to the violin, with the guitar, maybe a little even better. I can play most worship songs, but most songs are easy to play anyway, they usually follow a pattern. ex: E, A, B.....or G, C, D.....or.....F, Bb, C....try it! Play it with Holiness...or Lord I Lift Your Name On High....or...Amazing Love...try It, I guarantee It would work out. I'm getting carried away with this stuff now. But definitely I have to say playing the guitar has drawn me closer to God. Practice time is now worship time.kay, Bye Now! God Bless

This isn't directed at any of the past replys, but is rather a statement for reading...

Theres only one way to remember things or in the case of playing guitar learn and get better at it and that is to practice. Even if you practice everyday, it will take you |forever|to get used to it if your not having fun and enjoying what your doing.

Think about it, you memorize things from school, and you can hold them in you brain for a fairly long time, but after a while you kinda forget them for off the top of your head use don't you?

I believe that guitar is the same way, nobody should have to tell you to practice because you should automatically be doing that by yourself because you want to, not you have to. And if your practicing on your own free will and enjoying it, then you will very likely pick it up quickly and grow in skill.....

I've been playing for about 4 years, it's really flown by. I agree with the practice. I've been doing it because I love it. I may not practice specific things as much anymore, but I still play lots. Ciao!

Yup. I agree with the practice thing too. Playing the guitar or any other instrument should be a pleasure, not an obligation. When i took my first five years of piano lessons, I resented my mom sending me to lessons. After that, i started to love music and now i play guitar and keyboard at my church. You'll have a hard time learning stuff if you don't wanna do it.
