| Hey, guys, I know this thread is :kdead: , but I found this on allmovie.com and thought it was interesting (and a bit depressing). Bear in mind they're speaking about On Her Majesty's Secret Service, the least popular Bond film, starring the infamous George Lazenby: Quote:
On Her Majesty's Secret Service stands out from other Bond films because it treats its main character like a human being instead of a superhero. He suffers moments of doubt, doesn't always know the right thing to do, and is even capable of falling in love. These changes bring a surprising warmth to James Bond, who is vividly brought to life by the underrated Lazenby with a mixture of macho charm and unexpected vulnerability. It is interesting to note that Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond, found Lazenby's interpretation of the role closest to his vision of the character.....
....While trailing his quarry in Portugal, Bond falls in love with Tracy Draco (Diana Rigg), daughter of a notorious gangster (Gabriele Ferzetti). The elder Draco agrees to help Bond find Blofeld, with the implicit understanding that Bond will marry Tracy.....
....When all is said and done, Bond does marry Tracy, but the honeymoon ends in sudden tragedy....
....As a result, the film is one of the few in the series that could boast more than a passing resemblance to the Fleming original.
| (emphasis mine)
Interesting, isn't it? The only accurate Bond movie, and people hated it. Well, okay, maybe Lazenby was awful. I haven't seen it. But the point is, people don't WANT the real Bond...they want the sex-crazed, trigger-happy Bond.

| I thought that film-wise that On Her Majesty's Secret Service was one of the better ones. I would agree with all that you posted on it.
George Lazenby was awful, though. That's what people hated I think more than anything. |

| Like I said, maybe he WAS awful. I'll have to watch it and see.
But anyway, I've had this vision for a long time: to write a movie where Bond falls in love with a normal girl who won't give him the time of day. I think the public's ready for it now - you can shake and stir the Bond formula all you want, but it's still the same old formula, and people are sick of it all. Add a new ingredient, and it can only get better. Okay, so it could also get worse. The trick is to add a GOOD ingredient. And, at this point, a different kind of girl is a good ingredient.

| Hee hee... Casino Royale looks hideous. Is it true that they call him Jimmy? (And I thought that was MY idea...grr....well, at least I can still copyright James "Jimbo" Bond.)

| Casino Royale was a James Bond spoof that starred David Niven as James Bond. |

| Oooo...dang! I know who David Niven is, now I have to keep trying to figure out where I know him from or I'll go insane. :kduh:
But was Royale not made way before any of the other Bond films? So what's to parody, the books? Were the books even that popular? Argh! *head spins around*
But still. Jimmy? Now, Jim... That, I can see as plausible. I can see how it might even be DESIRABLE to call him Jim, just to knock him down a few notches. But Jimmy?
Okay, waiting for Niven fan page to load.... :kshifty:
Well, THAT'S not helping. He just looks like a guy with a crooked nose. Grrrr....what have I SEEN him in????? :kmad:
OOOOOOO!!!! He's Inspector....Inspector....I can't spell it, but I can say it! The pink panther dude! Phew! Now I can sleep tonight.

| David Niven did not play Inspector Clousou (SP?) in the Pink Pathner movies, though he did appear in one, can't remember which one though...
He was in many old movies, the most famous off the top of my head was Guns of Navarone w/ Gregory Peck...
