I can see your point. However, I think it's what comes out, not what goes in that matters. Also, watching movies is not just entertainment to me. I watch it as art just as much as entertainment. I understand and appreciate your thinking though.

I think you get out what you put in, though. More and more I've come to realize that, even in the small things.

Like, for instance, I read the book "Every Young Man's Battle" recently. It stresses that even little things like glancing at an attractive girl is detrimental to your sexual purity. It's those small things that you put in that eventually lead to bad things coming out. Sure, "appreciating" a good-looking girl may not cause me to lust or whatnot immediately, but it certainly contributes and builds to increased sexual tension which can lead to sin in eventually.

Films like Austin Powers are trashy, but amusing enough that we're lured into watching them because, apparently, if it's funny, that makes it ok.

Just to clarify, I _have_ seen the first two Movies, and I'm not proud of it. So, I'm definitely not saying I'm perfect. Just some observations/revelations I've had that I thought I'd share. ;-)

Also, not to be cliche, but WWJD? ;-)

If I honestly ask myself if I could watch that movie with Jesus sitting right next to me in the theater, I sure wouldn't be seeing many films. I _know_ Jesus wouldn't say "well, it's ok because it's REALLY funny and the storyline is clever."

Just my 2 cents.

Good points. However, I use the "out not in" rule and it works fine for me. I do think it was a little disturbing how Mike Myers succeeded in making me laughing at immature jokes though. That doesn't mean I'm going to start thinking of women in the same manner that Austin does. Also, I don't think the glancing at women thing can be avoided. Not thinking of women as sexual objects can be, but glancing at them is a subconcious, involuntary thing most of the time. It's what you do with that thought that enters your head that matters.

You said it yourself, you didn't like hearing yourself laugh at the course jokes. ;-) I feel the same way. I know I would find that movie funny if I watched it, but that fact is that I _shouldn't_ be laughing at some of that stuff. Many of those jokes are dirty and immoral and that's no laughing matter. Every time I view junk like that I have to make a compromise. "Well, It's ok to see the trashy movie because it's funny and entertaining and my friends are doing it." That's not what we're called to do, though. We're called to be strangers and aliens on the earth, set apart for God. Just look at the name of the movie... "Goldmember"; need I say more?

And as for the glancing at women thing, I agree with you. We'll never completely change the way we're wired as men. Our eyes will be attracted to good-looking women; the trick is to "bounce" away. But, If we linger for even a second, I believe that's feeding an unhealthy sexual appetite. So yeah, you're going to see 'em, but if you "appreciate" them (as some of my friends say), you've gone too far. You'll find that after a while of "bouncing" your eyes away, they behave themselves better because you develop new habbits. Read "Every Young Man's Battle" for more on that. Great book.

I'm just using the gaurding your eyes thing as an example. You put in even a teeny, tiny bit of sexual gratification (just a "glance"), and you get out all sorts of bad things. I think the same is true for just about anything.

Again, do you think you could convince Jesus that it's ok to watch a movie like Goldmember, if he was sitting right next to you, using the argument that stuff can go in but it won't come out?

(Not trying to argue, just provoke thought. ;-))

I'm not going to respond to that because I don't want to turn this thread into a great debate. I'll stick by my idea that it was the characters that were funny, not the crude humor. The crude humor was just an unwelcome thrown in from Myers.

LOL! I wasn't trying to start a debate! I was just saying that it was intended to be a spoof, which it was.

Oops! I was referring to t3rm's post not yours. Sorry about the confusion.
