Well, the absolute BEST for sound and quality is a McPherson. All the way. Nothing compares.

but those cost a LOT....

I'd go with a Martin or Taylor then.

Well, this is how Matt explained it and how i got it:

the most sound-producing part of a guitar is the middle on the wood on the front-which is right where the soundhole on most guitars is. it's really big and right in the place that produces the best sound. basically, there's no wood there for the sound to go on!

so that's why it's offset and small. tell me if that makes sense to ya

tell me if im interpreting this wrong but...are you saying that the middle part of the top of the guitar makes the most sound when there is no hole in it because the sound from the strings bounces off the top of the guitar? from what i understand about acoustic guitars the place where the soundhole IS is where the sound is initially made because the sound coming from the strings travels into the guitar throught the soundhole and resonates in the whole guitar. so if the soundhole was placed right under the strings as it is on traditional acoustic guitars, thats where the sound of the guitar would be loudest and most articulated because it is closest to where the source of the sound; the strings. i think im just gonna revisit that website and see how mr. mcpherson explains it himself thanks for your response and once again correct me if my interpretation of your explanation is wrong.

that is how mr. mcpherson himself explained it. although i probably said it in a more confusing way.

the hole is like the hole on a recorder (the little thing you played at school in music class a long time ago). i mean the bottom hole in the recorder, not the whistle one. if you cover up the bottom hole in a recorder, it doesnt really make a difference. you can still hear it fine.

so, by moving the hole from the most vibrating part of the wood of the guitar, the guitar wil produce better sound.

the wood is the stuff that produces the sound anyway. if it were just the hole, you could be seeing plastic guitars or like plexiglass or anything. so when there is a big hole in the best part of the wood (as on traditional acoustic guitars), it takes away the most flexible and therefore most sound-producing part of the guitar.

that's also why there's a cantilevered neck.

if you think about it, it will be obvious why mcphersons have the best sound too. plus they are easy to play, unlike martins which i think are the next best guitars.

well, that's my last shot at explaining it. i tried to say exactly what Matt said, but i dont think i said it right. he just explained it so simply.

Haley, yeah i can understand the logic behind where they put the soundhole now after i went to the website and read it last night. thanks for the response though, i think you were on the money with your 2nd explanation.

Epiphone. The acoustics are awesome. Dean guitars are really good too. Just my two cents.
