| I think that the profanity in movies is usually unnecessary and detrimental to its quality. Maybe the script-writers are just trying to dumb down the movie. I do know that I don't need 50 curses thrown at me to get the idea that someone is a little angry or excited.

I think that it is really overdone in most movies, sometimes for shock value, and other times just becuase it's easier to curse to express anger than it is to do the acting well. but at any rate, i really don't consider any words "curses" (other than taking the Lord's name in vain) so i guess i really can't talk in this thread...
i'm with goodness.... profanity is the mildest offense in movies. |

| I'd have to agree that profanity is one of the milder parts of film, but nevertheless, I don't like to hear nasty language in little kids films. And in some movies, it's just a whole TON of cursing. I know that the Bible doesn't really say anyting about "Curse Words" but it is disrespectful, causes others to be angry/offended, and may be a way of venting anger. The Bible speaks against these things. Also, they may cause a weaker brother to stumble, and affect your witness.
One other problem, at least for me is: I like to quote movies, and half of them have swearing in them. It really messes up the quote.

| YEah, I know this sounds stupid, but I saw "Beetoven 4" and they had an H word, and possibly a D word, plus I know I've seen at least one other G movie with cussing in it. Why bother putting it in there?

| "The Mexican" was just a little too much for me too handle. I mean, it may be the Mafia, Brad Pitt Julia Roberts, but I still don't like the amount of cursing in the movie.
I deffinately agree that cursing can be 'necessary' to capture the true essence of the character, but I think 99% of the time it's over-done.
Just my humble opinion. |

Just my humble opinion. | I know what you mean. I didn't see "The Mexican" (I can't believe my favorite actor Brad Pitt agreed to do a romantic comedy...), but I did see "Magnolia." And I can certainly say that it was ruined by the amount of cursing. There must have been a total of 50-75 different ones throughout the movie (I wonder about the guy who wrote that screenplay....). I'm usually one to be able to withstand cursing, but it got to a point where it was just too much. I also agree with the person who posted earlier about them being unnecessary. They certainly don't add anything to the movie and I sometimes think that they're just thrown in to appeal to certain audiences.

| "Memento" had a ton of swearing in one scene. I thought it was semi-appropriate, though.

| In most movies, it's way over done. But in some films, like Black Hawk Down, that was really how they talked. It doesn't make it right, but it was accurate. Swearing in movies normally doesn't bother me, except when they take the Lords name in vain.
Not to get to graphic here, but I'd rather see some guy get blown up, then hear someone take the Lord's name in vain alot.
Just my $.02

| What's bad is there's a lot of movies I've seen on TV... and they are just really bad language wise and I never realized it... until I watched it on video. Karate Kid comes to mind there's a scene where its nothing but a cuss word every couple seconds.
