Wow, a thread I started has actually done alright! And has anyone tried taking pictures of Fireworks or lightning? Both are awesome, but fireworks are MUCH easier.

Haven't tried, but that sounds like a cool idea. Might do so if I can afford a camera this summer.

Nix, what camera setting were you using? Any idea? And what type of camera do you have? All of these were taken on a digital.

This one for example: Was taken at F Stop 7, Shutter speed of 4 seconds and with 'film' ISO 100. Like I said, it's digital, but that's just how sensative the sensor is to light rather than the film.

And here is one that is *closer* to what you might get with a point and click camera. It's at F 2.8, ISO 100, and 1/3 of a second as the shutter speed. Umm, I've read about taking some firework pictures with just a 'normal' camera, and what they recommended was like getting film that is as fast as possible(ISO 400... or 800 if your camera supports it), turning the flash off and then just taking some pictures. Just when they fireworks are at their prettiest point. And if you can set your shutter speed, have it at like 1/30th of a second. And that way you don't need a tripod (oh, i had a tripod for every firework picture I have taken) Anyway, here it is...

*edit* and Nix... These pictures were taken pretty close, a little closer and we would have had stuff falling on our heads...

Goodness - Yes, all of the pictures you have seen from me have been taken on a digital camera. It's an Olympus 3.3 Megapixel. I really love digital cameras as long as they have a resolution high enough to print a clear 8 by 10 picture.

Although I despise taking pictures, I do believe that a lot of skill is required to take good photographs. Photography is an art and the ritzy stuff usually have symbolic meanings angles and whatnot. Dynamics are the key in photography. Like the flower picture, great picture, but to make it dynamic, boost the color range on the development and crop it dynamically. Add contrast and viola.

This was done in photoshop. I cropped it, desaturated the grass and sharpened the flowers.

*Note: If i would have spent more time on it, I would have touch up with some purples in the picture to give it a cooler and more contrasted feel.*

When boosting the color range, did you use a filter that looked like this:

The reason i'm asking is that i have seen a professional photographer use photoshop to cut the range off the high or low end of the color, which really did something for the picture adding contrast and color intensity. However, I have Corel Photo-Paint 8, and all i can do with that filter is SMASH the color range rather than cut a little of it off. Am i making sense?

Yes, although Adobe has a bit easier command "Autoadjust Contrast". Then you can just tweak the contrast a bit more. Adobe has a tool called desaturate, so I just ran that over the grass like a paintbrush. All newer programs should have a tool like it. As far as the flowers, I slightly saturated them to make them seem less washed out, with a paintbrush.

Alright, so here is my version... But do you have anything i can read about cropping or something? because sometimes the background makes the picture, or it shouldn't be cropped

Very nice. Unfortunately I don't have any documentary in arts or photograghy. I'm just an artist so yeah, like the saying goes : when in rome, eat cheese. or something like that. Yeah, sometimes the background does make the picture, but not always. If the background detracts from the main focus, you have to crop it or do something with it. Personally, I chose the very wide panoramic view because I have some fetish with panorama . When you do that, try to keep the margins about the same so the image isn't slightly off center. If you do go for a dynamic placement (such as toward an edge) make it apparant thats what your aim was, otherwise it looks off. Very nice the way you did yours, just slightly bring in the top margin and yer done =)
