Prime minister just announced:

- Schools and day cares up to 5th grade to open again on the 15th of April
- All measures extended to 10th of May. Including the prohibition of gathering of 10 or more people.
- Mass gatherings are banned to at least August. Meaning all summer festivals/camps/etc. can't take place this year.

Interesting numbers: A week ago, every infected person here was infecting on average 1,4 people. It has now fallen to 0,9 people. That is why they are opening the schools and day cares (up to 5th grade).
The number of hospitalized, ICU and respirator patients has been falling very slowly for a few days.
I think the official stance is that we avoided a healthcare collapse (like in Spain or Italy), but that we need to think long term and that many measures will for sure be in place during many months more.

wow. here on the west coast schools aren't expected to resume until the new school year.

in washington state, we've been directed to continue sheltering in place until may 4th. i have a sneaking suspicion they will reevaluate the state of things and extend beyond may 4th. most people are thinking memorial weekend (last weekend in may) at the earliest for resumption of basic normal functions, like stores reopening, etc.

Term ends on Thursday for 2 weeks. Still have no communication about what's expected next term, but we're anticipating remote learning at least for the start. Schools are still anticipated to be semi-open so kids have somewhere to go if they can't be at home.

This week they reopened a lot of stuff here. Hair salons, tattoo places, dentists, massage, spa, zoo, ...

I guess we will see in two weeks time if it was too soon or not.

Status on gathering bans:

- More than 10 people banned until 10th of May
- More than 500 people banned until 1st of September

School term resumes next week, and the Premier for our state is pushing for students to return to school one day a week for the foreseeable future (but in staggered year groups).

Still waiting to hear what Catholic Educaiton is planning; at this stage I'm hoping I can still do some remote work. It's good to have a nice quiet day at home.

As of this past Monday face masks are required in public. Stay at home is still in effect until May 8th. SOME areas will start loosening restrictions then but there is no clear indication of who or what that entails. Schools here start assigning mandatory work next week but it will be either online or through the mail. Several county coroners are upset because the state is reporting death numbers which don't match the official numbers in the counties. My county is one of them. We are listed at five but our coroner did a video last night saying there are only three confirmed and two of them were NY residents who lived near the border and died in a PA hospital. Lycoming county is showing two and their coroner is saying they haven't had any. It's frustrating.

https://twitter.com/WHO/status/1217043229427761152

This reminded me of back in January when the first cases were reported by international media. Member states asked WHO if they should be worried and WHO said that no action was needed. China had it under control and it couldn't be transmitted between humans.

I remember we were talking at home about how extreme the measures China was taking were if it was under control and not a big deal.

I guess now we know why...

it's discouraging how politicized this pandemic has become - and Twitter posts like this from the WHO certainly don't build confidence for the WHO "establishment".

Just got an email from the boss for the plan for this term (starting on Monday):
Weeks 1-2 will be encouraged remote learning (similar to what we were doing at the end of last term)

Weeks 3-5 - students begin to return 1 day a week spread over 5 with no face-to-face learning but access to teachers - this is at the behest of the state premier for what she wants all schools to do.

Week 6-10 - start to resume normal timetable as students attend more frequently.

The email we were sent said work-from-home rostering should work similar for the first half, so I'm hoping that will include me too. It'll be nice to save money on petrol. :P

Teachers and students who are meet the government's "high risk" situations will still need to work with remote learning, but by Week 6 everyone else should be at school.

Great article about US life going forward. I agree that we missed the boat on self isolating and it's time to adjust to the new normal.

Maybe I'm just a little salty because I live in the most rural state and were acting like it's NY City...

Our state is beginning to ease off restrictions to allow small social gatherings at people's houses (2 adults and children) by Friday.

There is a lot of evidence that the virus is weakening. And it was certainly never as deadly as initially purported.

I was happy to play the game when we didn't know anything, but I'm done now. Whatever tiny shred of faith I had left in the media is now gone.

I'm guessing they will try to whip us up into another panic in the fall and it will magically go away on November 3rd.

ps - i should add that I live in a rural town in the most rural state in the US. you can count the cases around here on two hands but we act like it's NYC in march. be safe, use your head, and take care of your people!!!

Looking pretty dire in Texas, where I'm at. And, many friends of fam have died. Also have friends that have had it, so I'm not willing to discount it yet.

I'm taking a "I'll be as safe as possible" track. I still wear my mask when I go into public, and I make sure to not touch my face without washing thoroughly.

My biggest fear is what the surges, like we are habijg in Texas, will do to our healthcare infrastructure.

To be clear I'm not discounting it at all. I'd just like to see more common sense practiced... especially where I am. It's concentrated in a few cities, but many people (like me) live out in the country.

I also have qualms with how the situation has been handled by my state government. It's terrifying to me that we have set the precedent that the governor can shut down the state in the name of safety.... and the people will go along with it!! And not only go along with it, but they will rat out their neighbors for breaking the illegal rules.

If I was in Texas or Chicago I would act according to the situation... just like I am here in Maine. The situation here is that it's rare, and not widespread. I just don't understand why my governor can't figure this out. She just delayed opening a slew of businesses again because of the situation in "other states". What does that have to do with Maine?

Sorry if this was a bit ragey. I was in the hospital when the lockdowns were enacted and came home with a kid that still hasn't met some of his family. My heart really does go out to the victims of the virus, but it's just not reality where I am right now. I'm not advocating for unsafe behavior, just common sense!!! Take care of yourself and your people, everybody! but know your rights!

Not ragey at all. And, actually, I agree with quite a bit of what you say.

Instead of by state, there really should be some other geographical marker that is used. Maybe by city is too small, but at the least things should be more dependent on counties or collections of counties, imo. Like, for thr most part large portions of West Texas are fine, some haven't had any cases. I think the people should still be wary and cautious, but it seems to me that businesses in those areas should be able to operate more normally!
