Post Newsboys Song Devotionals

Where you Belong/Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus

When you're dull from all that glitters,
When your thoughts have a hollow ring,
When you can't escape from the feeling,
You're getting it wrong.
All your foolproof plans seem foolish,
All your status is status quo,
All you really need to know
Is where you belong.

Turn your eyes upon Jesus.
Look full in His wonderful face.
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim
In the light of His glory and grace.

I was used to the cold for so long
That I couldn't feel anything.
And I shivered and stared like a beggar
Who won't lift his hands.
I was numb until He touched me.
I was deaf until He heard.
I was senseless 'till I met the one who understands.

Turn your eyes upon Jesus.
Look full in His wonderful face.
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim
In the light of His glory and grace.
Turn your eyes, Turn your eyes, Turn your eyes
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim
In the light of His glory and grace.

The things of our world are cheap and temporary. They are ultimately unsatisfying. Our ambitions will only get us so far. The book of Ecclesiastes is full of Solomon looking everywhere for pleasure and fulfillment. He couldn't find it anywhere under the sun. He tried popularity. It faded away. He tried friends. They left eventually. He tried working hard with his hands. He knew nothing he did would last long or stay built long. His attempts go on and on. God gave Solomon great wisdom, and with that wisdom Solomon simply told us this: Live righteously before God. Be diligent. Do everything you do for the fullest. But how? Why bother if it's all going to waste anyway?

Because God said so. And because we answer to Him. That's why.

We absolutely cannot do what we do solely for worldly gain. It's selfish and definitely goes nowhere in relation to eternity. It will wear us out in the long run.

We'll also be worn out if we rely on our strength alone to do the things of God.

Jesus is our source of strength and hope, and He is our rest. He not only gives us strength, but He gives us comfort and rest. He's all that we need. What's better is He doesn't get worn out. He doesn't need a break. He isn't limited to helping one person at a time. There's no waiting in line or waiting on hold for the Jesus Helpline. He's right there, all the time. All we have to do is turn to Him. He's never far, unless we push Him away over and over again. Even when we come back to our senses and call out to Him after pushing Him away, He is faithful and right there.

Jesus has a way of putting things in perspective. All the things we worry and weigh ourselves down with become insignificant and small when we lay them at His feet. Psalm 55:22a says, "Cast your burden on the LORD and He shall sustain you." 1 Peter 5:6-7 says, "Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you." Isn't it incredible that we have a Savior who cares for us? What religion can claim that? Can anyone genuinely say that about any world leader? There is one, and only one, God Who cares for us. What love!

Turn your eyes upon Jesus.

I remember that particular song getting me out of a pretty stressful depressing part of my life.

I had just left home, was living by myself, first job and kinda failing at that. Very lonely time. That song haunted me from the radio. Those lyrics pulled me into prayer, allowed me to turn my eyes to Jesus and one more kiwi took up the sword.

That's awesome. I love how God uses songs to work on us like that, and to give us the strength to look to Him.

Post Presence (My Heart's Desire)

Presence (My Heart's Desire)
I lift up my voice to The King, The King of Glory
I hold out my hands to The One who is worthy
I long for Your presence
I long Lord I need Your touch

Come oh Lord and fill up my life
With the light of Your presence this is my heart's desire
Oh Father, come and let Your spirit abide
I long for Your presence this is my heart's desire

I long to be washed in the well of Your mercy
I long to be warmed by the fire of Your glory
I long for Your presence
I long for Your healing touch

Come oh Lord and fill up my life
With the light of Your presence this is my heart's desire
Oh Father, come and let Your spirit abide
I long for Your presence this is my heart's desire
It's my desire
Lord, it's my desire
Lord, You're my desire
I wanna feel Your presence
I wanna feel Your presence
I wanna feel Your presence
I wanna feel Your presence, Jesus

Come oh Lord and fill up my life
With the light of Your presence
This is my heart's desire
Oh Father come and let Your spirit abide
I long for Your presence
This is my heart's desire it's my desire
Lord, You're my desire
Lord, You're my desire

This is most definitely a song of complete longing for God. The closest passage of Scripture I can compare this song to is the Psalms, specifically Psalm 63.

1 O God, You are my God;
Early will I seek You;
My soul thirsts for You;
My flesh longs for You
In a dry and thirsty land
Where there is no water.
2 So I have looked for You in the sanctuary,
To see Your power and Your glory.

3 Because Your lovingkindness is better than life,
My lips shall praise You.
4 Thus I will bless You while I live;
I will lift up my hands in Your name.
5 My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness,
And my mouth shall praise You with joyful lips.

6 When I remember You on my bed,
I meditate on You in the night watches.
7 Because You have been my help,
Therefore in the shadow of Your wings I will rejoice.
8 My soul follows close behind You;
Your right hand upholds me.

9 But those who seek my life, to destroy it,
Shall go into the lower parts of the earth.
10 They shall fall by the sword;
They shall be a portion for jackals.
11 But the king shall rejoice in God;
Everyone who swears by Him shall glory;
But the mouth of those who speak lies shall be stopped.

David's whole being desired God day in and day out, no matter the circumstance. If times were good, he wanted God's presence. If the situation was negative, he especially wanted God's presence. David found God to be his sole (soul...?) satisfaction.

When David was full of God's presence, it couldn't help but show itself (verse 5). That's what we should want as Christians. God saved us from eternal separation from Him by way of His Son Jesus. He sacrificed His own Son, Who went forth willingly for that matter, to pay the price of our disgusting sin. That should fill us with the deepest gratitude and the strongest desire to be near to Him and close to Him. Who can reject Someone Who loves them so much?

So often we try and fill our hearts with things that won't satisfy. I know this is a common theme in today's Christian teaching, but it really needs to be emphasized. We fill our hearts with lustful thoughts and images, crass humor, violence, judgement, and the list goes on and on. None of those things will get us anywhere good, and they certainly won't have any impact for eternity. Let's consider verse 6: "When I remember You on my bed, I meditate on You in the night watches." For some, the first thought when they go to bed is fantasies or judgement on others, etc. How much more wholesome it would be if for all Christians our first thought upon entering our night's rest is of our Savior?

Oh Father, come and let Your Spirit abide.
I long for Your presence.
This is my heart's desire.
