Line 6 Helix

Let me explain my current situation right now:

I have a waaaay too powerful and heavy tube amp (50W, 25kg). A waay to heavy pedalboard (huge metalic box. Kinda empty inside).

My gear was purchased when I was a teen and bigger/more power was equal to better.

Now that I am old and fragile (maybe even wiser), I am considering a rework of my gear. I take public transportation in this cold and wet country and I don't want to carry too much. But I am hesitant to reduce the quality.

Use scenarios:
- At home, in my apartment. I practice every saturday. To not annoy my neighbours, I need something with headphones out. But it also needs audio in so I can play on top of songs when I practice, with the same pair of headphones.
- Worship practice. There is a small practice amp at our worship practice room. A katana. It works fine for the purpose, so I just need to bring my instrument and effect pedals.
- Church service. We use in-ear system, so really, I don't need an amp. I need something with a line out and effects.

My worries is that after playing with a tube amp for years, I will think the quality sucks.

I had a look at the Line 6 Helix

Does anyone have any experience with this?

I was looking at it on the internet and it seems to have everything I need for my requirements. But it is a lot of money to throw at something without being sure. Unfortunately the biggest musical gear chain here has gone bankrupt, so can't test these things out. I need to order over the internet.

Disclaimer: with the exception of the Zoom G9 which had a tube boost, everything I have used has always been multi-FX digital

I bought a Helix last year and love it! It is so versatile, easy to use, and you can do sooooooooo much with it! It also has a Snapshot mode that let's you seamlessly adjust any and all parameters on all patch blocks at the press of a button. It also has trails to carry over when you switch a block off (ie Delay or Vern). HX Edit also lets you adjust and build patches real time from a computer.

I think the sound is awesome, and I just run the DI out of it to the system, and use my amp as a monitor. If anything were to happen to it, I would sell a kidney and buy another one.

I'd say listen to some samples, and if you can, try and use one for realsies. But I think it's amazing, and you will probably be able to find a tone you are more than happy with.

Aha! Super helpful.

I am really tempted. It will eat up my whole years gear budget plus a bit on the top though.

But after 8ish years of the same rig, maybe it is time for a change.

And honestly, the weight advantage is really tempting.

Bear in mind it is reasonably heavy (not pedal board heavy mind you) - I bought the backpack for it, which was super helpful. And I can fit a whole heap of leads, extension cords and spare strings in it.

You can also record directly out of it with the USB interface if you're interested in that.

But yeah, definitely worth every penny, and it looks like Line6 are supporting it as their highest end pedal for the foreseeable future. They've been releasing firmware updates pretty constantly and adding new features - one of the latest features allows you to assign hot-keys to Windows programs from the pedal itself.

Realistically though, if your guitar and amp are fine you're definitely not going to need to supplement the pedal with anything else. I'd also look at the patches they make on Worship Tutorials and see if you like any of that. They also provide free updates for any patches you buy if they tweak anything. I use their AC30 patch and it is amazing.

Nice. Super helpful.

Yes, I saw there was a backpack for it, which I would definitely get.

I was looking into the new Line 6 POD GO, which just came out, is cheaper and smaller and is supposed to have the same stuff.

But it doesnt have XLR out. I want XLR out.

I mean, if you don't think you can justify the Helix, by all means look into other options. But just remember to factor in the amount of DSP and blocks you'll get in lower end options. I have a few effects that are jammed with blocks to give an amazing tone (not to say more is always better).

the output on the go is balanced (TRS), so you can just use a TRS->XLR short cable (don't need a DI). So it doesn't have XLR out, but you wouldn't need anything beyond a short cable to overcome that.

I have a full Helix floor, and I really like it, but the podGo has some really appealing things (simplicity, cost & weight).

what's amazing is that it's gone up in price since it came out (I think partially due to increasing costs in the supply chain). That said, Line6 has been dedicated on doing substantial software improvements, so I think it's still worth it.

I think for the floor, you can still get one used for ~1200 or so if you search, but it really depends on if you need all the IO, the blocks/switches, and whatnot. Otherwise the LT/Stomp can be a really good fit. For my money though, I think for a lot of people, this < $500 podGo is going to meet the need equally as well.

so let's say you don't need twenty seven different buttons to stomp, and no one really uses a rocker pedal any more... is there a scaled down "lite" version that is cheaper? the technology is cool, and it beat lugging a head to church for playing there. *not that I do this, but used to all the time*
