Thoughts About A New CGR

Per a recent text with Pauler we have set early July as the target for the next phase of CGR. He has been super busy and has asked if we can hold on just a bit longer.

That being said, we have about three months to figure out where we're going. What suggestions do you all have? Please leave them here.

Lee

Nr.1: Please make it a secure site. This isn't the 90s. Peoples email address and login info, incl. password are in danger.

Nr.2: There is some file hosting in use that is blocked by most enterprise networks because it is used for malware (File*somenumber* I think it is called). Change that.

Secondary:
Android app as well as website (or mobile first website)
Improve image upload stuff
Increase the ridiculously small size/dimension constraints for avatar. Or like most sites, it could resize it to what is needed
Working search
Update captcha so users can actually register

Other than that CGR is perfect

Most of these are going to be fixed when we update to a newer version of vBulletin or switch to a different software. The security issues are directly related to our outdated (and no longer supported) vBulletin.

I'm right there with Giuseppe on all points.

I also want to see the main-site album reviews and tabs resurrect. I know this is pretty much direct competition with Ultimate Guitar and CCLI, but this is a great Christian community and I think it's possible to revitalize that portion of the community.

A new logo/site theme/facelift would also be cool to see. This is conjecture, but I think that some people see the early-2000s look and cobwebs in the corners when they drop in and automatically think this place is deserted, hence why the community isn't growing much.

I've wondered if it'd be easier for administration reasons if CGR was run on phpBB. I've had 0 experience managing vB software but some with phpBB so I have no ground to stand on for this suggestion. I also highly doubt that there's a way to import the database backup to make such a transition, so it'd be a complete reboot of CGR and therefore out of the question. I thought I'd put it out there just so it's out there.

I'm no graphic designer or programmer but I'm happy to assist anywhere needed.

I'll be sure to share if more thoughts come. I'm excited to see where CGR goes!

The biggest reason we wanted to stick with vBulletin is the hope that most of our stuff can migrate to a newer version. That software has evolved several times since our last update and we have to rethink some things.

I definitely think we need to keep a lot of the music related content around.

My only request is that I have the nuclear codes to bring the entire place down.

I vote to stay on vBulletin. having managed phpbb, it's got more holes than swiss cheese and required (when I managed it) near constant patching to stay ahead of the open source hax0rs.

Giu covered all the main pain points on my radar, well said.

The new version of vBulletin allows for Cloud hosting and Apps. There is also a better chance that some of what we already have may be able to migrate to a newer version. I don't know anything about this stuff so...yeah.
