Behringer UltraCurve - The (Kinda Lame) Story

Bought it to use at church once upon a time, realized we didn't need it there, and it sat at home forever while I tried to sell it.

Until now.

The bass player in my band plays two different basses: a 6-string fretless, and an upright stand-up bass. Both sound dramatically different through a PA system. We were having issues with feedback while trying to amplify his stand-up bass. Then I had an idea! The UltraCurve is packed with amazing features that might remedy this situation for us. And that it did! I was able to use the RTA on it to identify problem frequencies, use the GEQ to target and notch those frequencies out, and was able to use the built-in dynamics control to add a little compression to smooth out some of his more wild dynamics (an amplified upright bass can be a tough beast to tame). Once I set it, I was able to store all of the parameters as a preset. Now if we ever take the bass out to a gig, if we get there early enough I can re-tune the EQ for the venue and save that venue's settings as another preset, and so on for other venues we may play.

Before I implemented this piece, his volume was dismally low with the upright bass before we got feedback. Now it goes just as loud as his electric bass can.

Okay okay, why all this rambling about taming an upright bass?

Well, the UltraCurve is a mastering processor designed to go between your mixer's outputs and your PA amp's inputs, mainly to shape the overall tone of the master signal going through the system, control the stereo image (widening, narrowing, even angling), notch problem frequencies, etc. As such, it only has XLR inputs and outputs. But a couple adapters later and it seems I was in business!

My point: I picked this thing up for $150 used and was able to get waaaay more functionality out of it than the price would suggest to do something it wasn't even really designed for. I find that to be simply incredible. Don't be afraid to use your equipment however you want; just because it's not designed to be used for something doesn't mean you can't use it anyway.

We had an UltraCurve at Church for a while, and it was one of the most magical pieces of equipment I'd ever seen...

Until it died.

They really are magical. How did it die?

I really like the DEQ2496, I've used them in a few places, and for what they cost, they work great, and are excellent little problem solvers.
