They're saying 143 million people. It's my understanding that these "services" collect this information and make it available to lenders whether you actually ask for a credit report or not. They also offer paid "services" and those folks are really at risk because their credit card info is kept as well.

Indeed.

If you have any sort of loan (even student), I would imagine someone somewhere is aware of it. Are all three? I don't know, but I would think so. When you go to apply for a loan most of the time they will pull your credit history from all three places to get an accurate picture because each one can report things differently.

So, basically like half of America is in danger of identity theft, now?

Great.

How the heck do we guard against identity theft in light of stuff like this??

I feel very vulnerable right now.

I'm pretty sure I've never used their credit report services, but this is still alarming.

What about people who have taken out student loans?

So, ive never used these types of services, but if I have taken out loans, does that mean that there is a possibility they have my info because loan companie have checked out my credit info?

Would this mean that, potentially, anyone who has taken out a student loan has their info leaked?

As someone with, uh, a lot of student loans, I also hope to have answers to this soon.

That's correct, as far as I understand it. You don't really have a say in whether or not the big three credit reporting companies have your info if you have any sort of credit or loan history.

That would be my understanding. The companies report your debt even if you've not applied for other loans. Just so they debt will be registered if and when you apply for another loan.

there is just no way the CFO or IS director didn't know between the incident and the sales. a breach like that is a red alert. they had to have been notified within a day or two, especially for the info systems management chain.

I just saw something on twitter where apparently if you check to see if your information was exposed on Equifax's site, that in the fine print it says that you forfeit the right to sue or be a part of any class action law suit.

I don't know how binding something like that is, but they are being real big jerks about their mess up, it seems.

Yep. Not sure if that arbitration clause is enforceable or not, but I'm definitely not signing up for the service they're offering right now.
