Reading the words to the chorus, no where does it seem that God is giving "us" the nations. I would say that the "cry of my heart" would be that God would fulfill His promise to Jesus, giving Him the nations.

In essence, saying "Lord, the cry of my heart is for Jesus to win the nations to Himself."

I just got back from Greece yesterday. I was part of a ministry group that used "You Said" as kind of the theme song for our campaign because our goal was to get Bibles to all of the 80 islands around Greece. We interpreted that song and the words, "Distant shores and the islands will see your light." and "O Lord, we ask for the nations." as saying that we are crying out to God to make the Greek's hearts open to what we have to offer, and praying that God will give us the nation for His glory.

laughing to tears

jay42,
you had me and my roommate in hysterics. i actually love this song because i believe it allows us to claim the vision that Christ had for the world... a vision which He then passes on for us to accomplish with His Helper... but i also totally agree with what you said about the creepiness... it IS a little creepy to be making such a bold statement about what God said when we're not even sure it's biblically accurate...

Scripturally Correct

Ps. 2: 7 I will proclaim the decree of the LORD :
He said to me, "You are my Son [d] ;
today I have become your Father. [e]

8 Ask of me,
and I will make the nations your inheritance,
the ends of the earth your possession.

9 You will rule them with an iron scepter [f] ;
you will dash them to pieces like pottery."

10 Therefore, you kings, be wise;
be warned, you rulers of the earth.

I think it's important here to understand what Reuben Morgan is saying. Whether the scripture is speaking to us or just to David and his people, is pretty clear if you read Ps 2 in it's context.
However, Christ tells us in Mt. 28:18 to "...go and make disciples of all nations...."
and in Mt 7:7 & 8 He says, "Ask and it will be give to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks the door will be opened."

It is pleasing to God when we ask for things that are according to His Word and His heart's desire. Obviously we all know it is God's will that we ask for the nations. I don't think we should complicate the song. Reuben's desire is that God will give us lost souls in every nation. That is honorable. We don't want to be unscriptural nor do we want to be legalistic. This is an awesome song and I am in my 50's and have seen songs thrown out for so many reasons in my lifetime. Giving nations of lost souls to us to win to Christ is God's will and asking Him to give them is God's will....so Mike....I say.....GO FOR IT AND SING WITH THE ANOINTING!!!!
ASK for Him to bless it! It is honorable that you so desire to please the Lord.

God bless!

I think its sad that an explanation needs to be offered in order to feel secure in singing this song. Its cool to offer background on a song, but when the words and purpose are so confusing to the majority of the congregation, I would reconsider even playing it.
