I hate to say that I've never listened to SRV, despite knowing about the legacy.

Got any recommendations on where to start for a newbie?

well, i was going to post you a link, but i don't have enough posts yet. good songs to get introduced to Stevie are: Couldn't stand the weather, pride and joy, empty arms, hug you squeeze you, tightrope, tin pan alley, testify, and so many.

actually, just watch "live at the el macombo" video.

Stevie's music can be said to be pretty simple, theoretically speaking. but just jump in there on it - with a stratocaster strung with 12-52's, into a clean fender amp, turned up real loud. be sure to hit all those bends exactly right...

Stevie and Jimmie's song "tick tock" would be a great song to Gospelize.

i've listened to all eras of Stevie. my favorite is on that bootleg above, from '77-'78. it's not exactly like the playing he did in the '80's on his studio albums. on this, Stevie is playing (most likely) a strat straight into a Super Reverb or Twin. no distortion, no overdrive that i can hear. playing very clean and he just flows and flows and flows. never at a loss for an idea. you do hear a clam here and there, but so what.

that is exactly how i wish i could play!
