Thumb Slap and Strum at the same time?

I'm currently learning Fingerstyle, and i'm learning Thumb Slap and Strum technique. I already know thce basic to do that tehnique, but it's hard to do Thumb slap and strum ONLY 1 string, every time i strum while thumb slapping, i keep hitting other strings and makes it doesn't sound good.

While playing the tab above, i keep strummed the 2nd and 3rd strings, do i actually have to mute them with my left hand while slapping and strumming?

Muting could help, definitely. Learning to control your thumb movement could help too.

Taking a song like More Than Words by Extreme and playing through it a few kajillion times might help in honing your slap and strum control. I'm sure there are others that would work as well. But given the popularity of that song, there may be a lot more YouTube resources on how to tinker with that style.
