What's the worst / best attempt to sell us snake oil?

Guitars, strings, picks, amps, effects, interconnects, speakers....

I am reminded of some varnish you could buy in the 1990s - the idea was, paint it on the outside of the silicon chips in your CD player and it will sound better.

What's the guitar equivalent of smoke-and-mirrors? have you ever been suckered? have you ever thought "no, surely not" but tried something just the same and found you liked it? have you ever laughed at something and found others swore by the 'improvement' they obtained?

I sound better with an unbuffed leather back of the strap.

sounds like snake oil, but the guitar doesn't move, which means I play better.

I'd say some of the added mass stuff from the '80s where it is essentially weights to make the guitar heavier because heavy guitars have more tone. (Which is a claim I believe to in and of itself be snake oil.)

When I bought My first set of EMG active pickups the Guy at the Music store said I needed to buy these special 9-volt batteries only they carried,Last longer, better tone than "normal" 9 volts, I wish I could remember the brand name, I didn't fall for it, been using dollar store 9 volts for years ZERO issues,

Danelectro zinc-carbon 9V batteries. Nothing wrong with them, just basic Chinese-made low-capacity batteries with a snazzy paint job, overpriced.
