Let's have a debate

In the interests of seeing the landscape changing now and then... discuss this; it's the title of a YouTube video I haven't watched...

which is better - a cheap amp with an expensive guitar. or a cheap guitar with an expensive amp?

Rob Chapman and Lee Anderton, great video actually, watched it a week or so ago,

I think their are good guitars at cheap prices, If you shop around, And like Rob says in the video, down the road, $30 gets you new tuners, $150 buys you new pickups, etc. And suddenly your cheap guitar is way better.

I'd spend the money on an amp and get a good cheap guitar

Absolutely a cheap guitar and good amp. Any cheapo guitar can sound good through a good amp, but every guitar will sound like crap through a bad amp.

I would also argue that just because an amp is expensive doesn't make it good.

In all seriousness, I would probably take the better amp and a lower quality guitar. I could be persuaded to go the other way though.

Get a good small tube amp and the best guitar you can afford after that.

I used to be an advocate of cheap guitar, expensive amp, but I've moved to "buy good gear, but good isn't necessarily expensive."

I found it amusing that one of the "cheap" guitars considered in the video mentioned was actually the same model as the electric guitar that cost me the most, although it's cheaper than it was when I bought it. My main electric was significantly cheaper, but was also second hand and is significantly nicer.

My two main amps were 350 NZD and 2500 NZD. Both are good amps, but good at different things. I'd happily gig with either, but prefer to gig with both at once.

My total pedalboard value probably now exceeds the cost of any individual piece of gear I own now though.

I'm definitely on the fence. It really just depends on how cheap we're talking though.

I mean, I'd play a solid Squier through a great amp over a $3000 guitar through a Squier SP-10

I'm on the fence too; I've had guitars as cheap as $200 sound okay through my Zoom G9 pedal, but when I bought my Maton it started sounding amazing (without really changing too much on it).

I'd rather have an expensive guitar because they're generally feel nicer to play (my Maton feels much more comfortable in my hands, which also helps when my hand cramps up).

At the same time, if I was going to be using the gear professionally, there are features I'd prefer my amp to have (in my current setup, I prefer having an amp with XLR out and like the convenience of being able to adjust it realtime through my computer). My amp retails for about $600 AUD.

I guess if you have a good guitar it will probably last longer and you can save up for a better amp (or borrow one) later on.

Some background: I play a prs singlecut standard and a 68 tele as my main guitars, and my other one is a prs torero so I've had a little experience with the upper end stuff. But proof to my ears of "cheap guitar / good amp = great" was the first time I played an epiphone les paul special ii. I can grab a brand new one at L&M for $169 today, and actually when I try out amps at the store that's the one I grab. It plays excellent and sounds as great as whatever I put it it through. And actually even cheaper guitars intended for the 10 year olds sound amazing through a proper amp.

But I have met all kinds of amps that still sound like junk no matter what you plug into it. Cab size alone matters SO MUCH, then there's 10" vs 12" vs 2x12 vs 4x12 with each step being a massive one, then there's speakers.. Man, don't like the marshall mg? Try it through a normal marshall cab with celestion G12T75's or Greenbacks or V30s. Sounds killer. There are some really bad speakers out there! Then there's the amp itself.. those old marshall avts sound amazing with a decent speaker, but through the stock avt speakers it sounds quite bad. But I've tried some other amps that sound terrible no matter what speaker I try, haha.

My main amp is one I bought for $500 on ebay Frenzel HBCW30. (Now granted, new price on it was ~1.5k.) Only one of my amps is terribly expensive. (Soldano SLO) Now my second most used amp was $900 used, a PRS Archon. I have an absolutely crazy dual channel high gain phaez amp. It uses an absurd number of 12ax7s. ($700)

Most of my guitars are either handbuilt or pretty middle of the road price wise. I buy used. learn to do a killer setup and you can make a lot of stuff feel great. Making something sound great is easier than making it feel great.

I think high quality and good price for what you get is the way to go. With amps these days, I am mostly a "get one custom built for you." Phaez is a real good option for this, and you can get exactly what you want. Want an SLO lead channel and a d*mble clean? Doable. Marshall 800 and fender blackface? (granted you will compromise on speakers for one of these.) Doable. Still in the cost of a mid level, amp. There really isn't an upgrade from that IMO.

However, for around $400 I could put together a more than decent rig.

No. You are forced to sell all of your gear, buy an expensive item and a cheap item.

And you're not allowed to build your own gear.

...that just doesn't seem like something I would do at all.

I think I will go in with the buying a decent amp with a cheap guitar.

Ive gone from a crappy solid state Behringer to a glorious Peavey with tubes. Makes a load of difference.

Though, I would also require some nice pedals as well...
