To Marshall Or Not?

So...I own a VOx Valvetronix and have been thinking about buying another amp. I want something simple that rocks. Someone suggested a Marshall DSL40C.

Thoughts?

Not a lot to go on there, answer some of the questions on this post http://www.christianguitar.org/forum...2/#post2639709

Will help significantly.

I would go for something a bit nicer and cheaper. Budget?

Frenzel and Phaez come to mind. What sound are you going after?
Phaez:

Handwired canadian amps. The high gain ones are really quite incredible.

A Phaez Asheville has gobs of gain and is a mini SLO. A Phaez Pasadena is a marshall style. An AFD is modeled on the appetite for destruction sound.

I own a dual phaez preamp with AFD and Asheville, and a head with the Asheville and raygun circuit.

Frenzel's in general have less gain, and are more refined and made in Tx. The deluxe plus with the jcm 800 preamp option would be awesome. I have the standalone jcm 800 preamp and it is lower gain than you might expect though it rocks with an incredible sound. Absolutely world class, though for high gain metal you will need a boost pedal. (rangemaster and SBN BDAB do the job nicely)

Either of these will probably be better options than the marshall, and run you a comparable amount.

I want this tone right here.

My goal is to have an Epiphone Les Paul with P90s.

Price needs to be reasonable. I don't have $1000 at the moment.

I won't be playing out. I don't have a band.

I want Jeff Lynne's crunchy sound.

I currently have a Jackson Dinkly but hope to move back to an Epiphone Les Paul with P90 pick ups.

FWIW...I have always wanted a Marshall half-stack because that is what I was conditioned to think was the amp to have. I obviously don't have that kind of cash at the moment...but if that's what I need...I would be willing to save for it. I don't need the amp right this minute...or even this year. I confess that I don't think I NEED this amp. I'm not in a band. I don't do shows. It would pretty much sit in my bedroom while I jammed on it...all alone.

I would keep my wattage down.

Is around $500 over budget? My suspicion is the frenzel might be the best choice. The little jessie with JCM800 preamp would run $525.

That's where I'd like to come in. That and the Epi Les Paul would run right at $1,000.

Man, you can get a gibson tribute model with p 90's for less than a g. If I were just going to be jamming in the bedroom, I would consider going with a modeling amp. I think you can get where you're wanting to go with a lot of budget friendly modelers
I will look into the epiphone a little bit more, but I'm thinking you could come in a lot better than your estimate on guitar, and if so you could get the frenzel and a good cab. The frenzel would be my choice, but I need effects so if I couldnt afford delay od reverb volume pedal it would be a modeler. fwiw I know someone on here who has an eleven rack they would sell I think. That is the finest piece of digital equipment I've ever laid hands on. I can't compare with and axe fx, but for the money.....eleven rack is wicked nice.

The estimate was for the guitar and an amp.

FWIW...I've got a Vox Valvetronix amp right now.

I'm winding some P-90s right now that will get you closer to the classic P90 sound than the current Epi pickups will. I will do them REALLY cheap for you (like, cost of the parts and shipping).

As for the amp? I think I get pretty darn close with my Dallas Rangemaster clone into my Vox NightTrain 15. Doesn't Lynn use Vox's mostly?

Bah! sorry read too fast. fwiw musicians friend is 20 percent off right now so that's 400 for the goldtop, Idk what he would take for the rack, but you should be well under a grand.

I tried to enter the code they sent for the 20% off but it said "only on selected items" and that guitar ain't on the list.
