The thing with Marshall is that unless you're paying triple digits, you're unlikely to find a solid tone. However, something like a used Peavey 5150 2x12 EVH combo could give you a solid crunch for around $500-600 if you find the right deal.

Far more gain and volume than I would think Lee would want and that is a backbreaker to move. Personally, I think there are some marshall flavored amps with better build quality cheaper out there today.

5150s are great for what they are, but I doubt that is actually what Lee would be looking for.

Try calling the customer service. They make stuff like that happen all the time. I've scored huge using the price match guarantee. It's worth a try.

The 5150 III is a bleeping awesome amp. It, however, is not British voiced.

You're probably right. Maybe I just keep pushing the amp because I used to own one and have sorely regretted selling it (though I did get $500 out of it).

Ahh yes, the British voice is something I overlooked.

On the 5150? Eh. It's not an amp for cleans (though I have managed decent warmish tones with the right EQ boost). Definitely more of a niche item, for when you want that smooth, heavy drive.

5150 III

I have owned the 5150 II, 5150, and 6505MH.

Never the Combo or the 5150 III

My Mako Mak4 is spoiling me though.

As for the amp? I think I get pretty darn close with my Dallas Rangemaster clone into my Vox NightTrain 15. Doesn't Lynn use Vox's mostly?
We may need to talk.

I don't really want a "metal" tone.

well, a marshall 800 style amp tops out at an early metal tone. IMO, it is the sound of rock and roll. It can pull off AC/DC and with a pedal you can get to 80's metal. But it is not a metal amp persay. The frenzel has that as one of its two channels.

Zeppelin and AC/DC would be as heavy as I want to get. That's why I was thinking Marshall...especially if I get the Les Paul with P90s.

Like I said...I want Jeff Lynne's "dirty" tone.

The sound on Don't Bring Me Down IS a Les Paul through a Marshall.

I really think you should look at a Vox AC15, Night Train, Orange Tiny or Micro Terror amps... And you will want a TS or Rangemaster in front of it.
