Future Plans for Current Setup

Right now my recording setup includes a M-Audio M-Track QUAD 4-channel interface, two Audio Technica Pro37s and a Rode NT1-A. I also have a DI box, but that's neither here nor there. I use Pro Tools for my software and do most of my pre-and-post effects using the software (gating, compression, limiting, EQing, etc.) but am looking at investing in some rack gear in the future.

The first thing I'm looking for is a mic preamp, because I know that can dramatically improve my sound. I've been reading that the ART Pro MPAII, when paired with better tubes, is the best bang-for-the-buck option for this.

I know there are a plethora of other rack mounted gear options, but whenever I look at them I feel like a total newb. How am I supposed to know if I never need a rack-mounted compressor, limiter, etc. and what, if any, difference that will make as opposed to software effects? I know the mic preamp is a big deal because it helps with tone. I'm not sure what else would even be beneficial in a never-going-to-be-profitable home studio environment; I just know that, as a hobbyist, I'm looking for the best bang-for-the-buck options.
