Going Anon

I went through a short phase of intentional electronic anonymity back in 2010. Lately, going to old sites where passwords are still somehow stored and realizing how flippantly unsafe I've been in my online practices in general, I've decided to go anon once again (at least, as anon as I can for now). When I say "going anon", I mean tools like Tor, VPNs, encryption, and habits like not letting browsers store passwords, using non-identifiable information in accounts that I don't want linked to my IRL identity (CGR is one of a couple exceptions), disabling Google accounts on my phone, using encrypted texting (though it doesn't account for the other person) and running all of my ingoing/outgoing through Orbot.

Anyone else do something similar to this?

I use all of those measures from time to time, but none of them very consistently.

Hotspot Shield is a great VPN service. If you use Google Chrome, Zenmate is a free VPN extension, though it's not nearly as safe or secure. It won't hide your machine, just your Chrome activity.

Fwiw, VPNs were not designed for anonymity.

I know. They're useful for bypassing firewalls and protecting your own network, though. But Frank's right, if you want anonymity, you're going to want to use the Tor browser.

Actually, even Tor won't work :P

Sorry, to be a downer, but there is no way to be fully anonymous on the internet.

Here's a good article on VPNs, Tor, and anonymity ...

Well. Sure. But you're a lot closer with Tor or a VPN than with nothing.

I dunno... You could also argue that it's a false sense of security. I guess if you're aware, you're fine :P

I tried Tor once. But when trying to access a forum I used to frequent (back in the days) it said that my machine had been blocked for posting inappropriate content. So I closed the whole thing and went back to chrome. No problem there.

For me, blocking trackers (with the Disconnect browser add on), using Duck Duck Go for search, and using different login names on every site is good enough. Oh, and not using Facebook of course.
