App development with Visual Studio

I usually just do android development with android studio. I found out that I could get visual studio via my uni, which allows to make apps for android and windows (from my understanding).

Anyone have any experience with this? Is it worth the effort of getting into it?

It seems that Visual Studio can make apps in a number of different programming languages. As soon as I get the time I will play around with it. I guess I should use C# right? That seems to be very in at the moment.

Yes, but Xamarin is out of my budget.

C# on Android IS Xamarin. Android runs Java otherwise.
