New Recording Gear Day!

Well, technically I got some of it in on Thursday, but the rest cam in today. Got:

Focusrite Saffire Pro 40
Firewire Card for PC
2 Blue enCore 100i
CAD KBM 412 Kick Mic
2 Boom stands
1 Mini Tripod stand

This is in addition to my Peavey PV8 (Which should let me control my DAW with it's sliders for mixing, I think)

My Audio Technica AT2020 Large Diaphragm Condensor Mic

Audio Technica ATM-63 Instrument mic

And Two CAD 22A vocal mics

That Saffire looks sick. Let us know how it works out.

The one thing that bugs me is there is no U demarcation on the gain knobs. So I'm having trouble dialing in a good setting to get decent volume with good clarity so far.

Like any new piece of equipment, I suppose you probably just have to play around with it until you "learn" its unique quirks.

Yeah, I mean, it's super highly rated, and the preamps sound fantastic, I just gotta get the right settings. Also, I need to properly learn a DAW, I'm just deciding on which to go with right now. It came with Ableton Lite, but I don't think I like it so far. Reaper seems to be good. I might buy a Reaper license if I can get it to record how I like.

The main problem I'm having right now is a serious delay in the monitoring, so I'm having trouble recording with previously recorded tracks. When it comes across the headphones, it's like just a bit too late so what I end up playing is off... How does one overcome that?

DAW is definitely important in how you'll use your equipment, based on built-in effects processing and monitoring (on the computer end). I've been slowly trying to learn the Pro Tools that came with my interface, and will likely upgrade to the full version after my new computer is built. I've heard good things about Reaper; let me know what you think of it.

Latency is either caused by the speed of the connection between the computer and the interface (USB 2.0 is notorious for this) or the speed of the computer's CPU (can't keep up with stacking effects for live monitoring, etc.) The more powerful your CPU, the better your DAW will run.

I am not a professional and my advice should not be held as authoritative.
