I've made my own blog engine....

...although it only fires off two cylinders.

You can go here to check it out!

Post New Blog - The Farm Boys Blog
  • I still need it to post the blog to the main blog page(The Farm Boys Blog), but I'll work on that whenever I can figure out PHP better.
  • The comment engine needs help (a ton of it for that matter)

I'm sure there are other things that need help, but this is my start. It's my first venture into PHP, and I'm pretty proud of this (so please don't pop my bubble )

Feedback and suggestions would be fantastic. Go ahead and make your own "posts" if you want! I won't stop you.

Rock on.

You will definitely want to put in some sort of CAPTCHA.

Yup.

I'm actually going to put it behind locked doors (if you know what I mean) when it's finished...I just have it in the open so y'all and try it can see what it does.

Nice work. If you ever have questions with the coding, there are a few of us here who code. I think myself, Ax... a couple of others, but I can't remember who.

One thing, just make sure you're protected from SQL injection!

There is one tiny thing that bothers me. It should be "post new entry" and "entry title". A blog is a site that hosts entries, like a journal of sorts. That's all.

I wish this were still true. The use of the word "blog" to refer to an individual post is pervasive now. I've heard it from dozens of different people.

I have been duped!

Thanks for clearing that up, bob!

When academics have slowed down I'll be able to spend more time on this...but I'm glad I have come this far!
Quick question for all you "other coders" out there: Is there a way I can have a script search through a file and append a post under a specified comment? The only functions I can find can add data at the end of a file, but I want to stick it smack dab in the middle of an html file.

Example:
HTML Code:
<html>
...blah blah blah...
<body>
<div class="content">
<!-- Post new blog post here --> (This is the string I want the script to find)
<div class="post"... (This would be the post appended by the script)
...
</div>
</div>
</body>
</html>
---End example---

If anyone wants the PHP file that I made for this, ask and you shall receive.

Happy coding and stay awesome.

... am I to take that post to mean that you are using PHP to modify .html files saved on your server...?

Yes.

Sad story: My hosting service only allows me to run .php files and the like only under the /cgi directory....which is a pain. So it's sort of my only option (at least that I'm aware of) to edit an existing html file.

ENGINE UPGRADE:
I threw in a few tweaks to make punctuation in the title not screw up the post's link.
I also tacked stripslashes on the entry's variable (thanks ben for pointing both of those issues out! go ahead and repost that entry if you like...and slap the images in there too )

ENGINE MISFIRE:
I love that I can put straight html tags into the entry textarea to format the post the way I want, but I have to put in line breaks <br> in order to get a break put in. What should I do to let Enter act as a line break?
(Sorry if the above doesn't make sense...)
