More updates! This is such an exciting project, and I can finally announce that

PROJECT TOASTER IS OFFICIALLY UNDERWAY

I swapped the 650W power supply for a Corsair RM750 (750W 80+ Gold Certified), which was just ordered today!

Since the prices of individual parts do fluctuate quite a bit (the CPU itself has fluctuated from $372 down to $344 and back), I'll be ordering them one at a time as great deals arise here and there, and of course as I can afford them. Which means that as soon as the I can afford the CPU and it drops to $344-349, I'll be ordering it. This will prove mildly frustrating in trying to keep track of what I've ordered, and of course storing things until I can assemble the build. However, it will also prove to be AN ADVENTURE!

Stay tuned later for blogs, vlogs, and thread updates pertaining to this build and other fun projects in the life of Ben Toast!

The PSU has been interesting. At first it was $120. Then it dropped to $110 and I ordered. It shipped immediately and then it dropped to $99, so I ordered again after requesting an RMA for the first one. Now I can get it for $80 after a rebate. So the second one hasn't shipped yet, so I requested a cancellation. If it cancels, I'll order again and use the rebate toward another part. Gambling with the parts market, I am. The motherboard dropped from $301 to $291, but I'm going to hold off and wait to see if that drops in price right along with the hard drives. The case, on the other hand, I know isn't getting any cheaper, so when it dropped to $98 this morning, I went ahead and ordered.

Anyway, my boss is letting me have stuff shipped straight here to the I.T. department for safe keeping until I build it.

So, uh, the ASUS x99-PRO is no longer available for an affordable price.

Thoughts on the Gigabyte GA-X99-UD5? I can get one for around $200.

Even though I much prefer ASUS, Gigabyte should be alright. Just make sure it at least roughly matches the specs you needed on the ASUS.

I favored the ASUS because it had a glorious rear I/O panel with USB ports for days. But, fwiw, if I'm going to get such a mediocre x99 board I could also do the ASUS x99-A... I don't know. I was favoring the built-in WiFi.

Eh, good WiFi cards are no more than $20

It's just a real bummer. The X99-Pro also came with the Asus Hyper M.2 card that could crank a M.2 drive up to 32Gb/sec. It was like, the board of my dreams. Sigh.

If at all possible you should use a wired ethernet connection anyways...

That is my preferred choice, of course.

FWIW, I still want that well-established ASUS quality. I'll probably go for the X99-A.

Project update!

Since the X99-Pro came off the market, I opted for the X99-A. This was just ordered last week and should arrive sometime this week. I've also discovered that Micro Center in St. Louis has my CPU in stock (Intel i7-5820k) for $299. With a three-year warranty, and after tax, it will cost $388, which is right around the lowest-end online retail price for the CPU without warranty or shipping. In other words, in strange turn of events, I am getting the CPU far cheaper in-store and all I have to do is drive 2 1/2 hours to get it.

PLOT TWIST: the price is only good until August 9th, so I have to order it before then. I should be able to go down to the store within a couple weeks or so after and still be able to pick it up. More on this later.

I've also decided to ditch the 2TB WD Black drive and opt instead for a 1TB WD Black and a 3TB Seagate Barracuda; it's a little more expensive, but I'm getting double the overall storage. The WD Black can be my working drive for files while the Barracuda can be my mass-storage drive. This also makes more sense than the other setup, as the X99-A doesn't come with the Hyper M.2 x 4 32Gb/sec card that I was originally going to utilize, so only using a regular SSD means I don't need all of my other drives to be blazing fast. The money I'm saving by going this route also means I'll be able to continue setting aside for a little better graphics card.

FRUSTRATION: The X99-A which I ordered, though the cheapest I could find, was $232 after shipping, where the X99-PRO had dropped to $240 before it fell off the market. This means I still payed roughly the same price for a slightly lesser board, and that just irks me.

POSITIVE NOTE: I am sooooo excited to finally be getting more parts. This project is slowly becoming more and more real to me as time goes on and as more parts come in.

The motherboard came today! Despite my resentment toward not snagging the Pro for $240 just before it dropped off the market, I am SUPER EXCITED that this is happening.

Picked up the CPU a couple weeks ago, CPU cooler and graphics card are en-route. By the current parts list, I am now only about $300 away from completing my build, but am thinking about swapping my fans for Noctua fans, which are quieter (which I like). I'm also thinking about the possibility of fashioning a 5.25" bay to hold dual slim-line optical drives and adding a hotswap bay below that.
