So if you guys would like to join in on the fun, post clips of you making your old beginner guitars sound epic and use the tag #cheapguitarchallenge! Hope you guys and gals like it! How cheap do you consider cheap?

Whatever you consider cheap. Cheap is a very subjective word anyway, so there's lots of stuff that fits that category.

One of my main guitars for playing out is a peavey generations USA that I got with a new set of pickups for $301. It is one of my all time favorite guitars.

Awesome. Would be cool if you write the price of the guitar. In that way it is an achievement to get the cheapest guitar to sound awesome

The cheapest guitar at my house is also my favourite - a 1979 Ibanez Roadster that set me back 375 NZD. I prefer it to American Fenders and Gibsons that I've played. Here is a clip I made with the guitar a while back when I was messing around with some direct recording. Nothing too polished, I was mostly just trying to see whether my wife thought that it was a good speed for singing that particular song.

The only guitar I have that's cheaper is my first acoustic, which is in a permanent state of being loaned out to people that would otherwise not have a guitar to play. Currently it lives at a Christian student hostel that I'm on the board of directors for. Apparently one of the people I previously loaned it to used it on a local tv show a few years back.

Chinese Tele clone £40 (that's new, delivered; list was £70 but there were a few scratches on the bridge)
new tuners £10
s/h P90 intp bridge position £5
wax pot bridge p/u... free
new bridge £18 (cheap Chinese allen screw height adjusters have poor threads, kept self-adjusting)

..that's £73, add 50% for US dollars, plus a couple of evenings' work. The guitar I use most weeks in church (it lives in my office in the church building) and I love it.

Ok. Squire silver burst standard $100. Fender noiseless pickups w/1 meg pots, caps, and transistor $100. Tech work: me. Pulled off the wall straight into the amp and recorded.

I think putting Pearly Gates in it kind of negates the "cheap" nature, lol. I still play my Rogue on occasion, but purely as a noise guitar.

If you want cheap, I have the pickups, wiring, pots, and tremolo from a no-name strat copy I had 10 years ago. Don't have anything to put it in. Might list it for sale.
