Currently I am taking a short seminar on Badiou and Philosophy.

One of the main themes is the importance of the Two, or relationality, that, namely, a mistake is found in a philosophy that isn't Void. Or, rather, that philosophy is that space of intersection whereby a conditional subject is brought in (so, the conditions of philosophy are the poem, the matheme, love, and the political).

One can see the problem of universalization in the commodification of all things to capital, I think. But, it seems to me that another pernicious universalization has become quite popular, especially among the atheist community. Namely, the oneness caused by reducing things to their most elementary building blocks. Perhaps a popular example of this can be found in those often quoted memes on facebook, usually attributed to Carl Sagan or Neil DeGrasse-Tyson that proclaim that we are all "stardust".

There are two related lingering questions in my mind. If this is true, if naturalism has a universalizing tendency, must the atheist accept this universalization? And if so, does this cause a sort of dissonance in Badiou, namely that he is an atheist, and yet he assumes the illegitimacy of this reductive universalization of matter?
