Beards & Beard Care

Yeah...don't know where this should go...so...here it is.

To those of you here who do have beards, what do you use (if anything) to help them grow more full? I have seen all sorts of suggestions and was wondering if anyone on CGR has experience or advice.

I have recently started taking Biotin because the doctors told Robin that she may want to take it in case she were to have any hair loss as a result from her gastric by-pass surgery. After reading up on it I found that some say it also helps facial hair grow in more full.

I want a full beard and have struggles with these patchy places on my cheeks my entire life.

I've heard that giving the skin a bit of a massage helps loosen the follicles and promote growth. I comb my beard daily, and this helps it feel and look nicer, and might help with the aforementioned as well.

I've also heard of lots of beard oils and conditioners, and I don't use any... just a good natural shampoo.

Unfortunately I'm pretty sure there isn't a cure for patchiness, but if it is just your cheeks that are patchy, you can trim down to a nice cheek line, and find a look that you like. This might help.

My beard has been thick almost right away--I shaved for a bit--but it was thick quite early on--sorry, I don't know how to thicken it up--other than have other genes...

Although shaving it from time to time can help.

It took a good 6 years for my beard to grow in thick (my avatar isn't what I'm growing right now). Right now I just shampoo/conditioner it to keep it from drying out, and comb it to keep it down and shaped. It's time to tame the beast even more though so I ordered some beard balm. It's supposed to help keep the straglers down and the beard tamed. We'll see.

I was always told to exfoliate exfoliate exfoliate. Just rub the stubble in circles. I don't know if that's what worked for me, but I can say now that I have an awesome beard.. Then again, it could be the Viking heritage in my blood...

Happy bearding!

I've been using a dandruff shampoo and conditioner (supposedly prevents dryness underneath) and I comb it. I see mixed messages regarding trimming so I have been avoiding it unless I get an unruly hair (which does happen).

It's looking a little better. There are a few of those unruly hairs I mentioned that have not been clipped yet. My mustache is getting long enough to comb over the scar where it won't grow in completely.

FWIW...genetics doesn't always help. My father and brother can grow full-on Taliban beards if they choose to. My brother is four years younger than me and started shaving about two years before I did.

Looking pretty good RM. If I get a chance later today I'll drop a picture of what I've been maintaining for a couple months.

So this is what I'm maintaining. It'll grow a little, then I'll trim it back down to this length.

I don't really have any advice on grooming beards or growing it fuller. But I do have a full beard that I've been growing for 3 months. I like to fluff it out sometimes to show the length, which drives my wife crazy. If you were to oil it down then it would look thicker but shorter?

On rogain: my friend asked his doctor if rogain works. The doctor said maybe, but do you really want hairy hands?

I ordered 2 different balms. Both are handmade and work pretty well. I like the Davey's Original California Blend better for sure (it smells like citrus candy, yum!). I was afraid that the scent would make me want to eat my beard, but it isn't overpowering at all and it does keep my beard from looking unkept so much. I'd definitely check out this guy's products. I ordered it Sunday night and got it Tuesday.

Update.. So i've been using Davey's for a week now and I still absolutely love it. Today I didn't have the chance to balm the beard and I can tell a huge difference: still soft but it gets out of control ha.

Get the balm if you want to keep your beard healthy. Next is a laser cut stainless steel beard comb that folds into a hand made wooden handle.
