Official Lyric-Removal Thread

For those of you who don't know already, we are beginning the process of removing lyrics from the songs available on CGR in order to satisfy the record labels. Their main concern over our use of their songs on the site was the publishing of the lyrics. For that reason we are beginning to remove the lyrics from all of the chord sheets and tablatures available on the site. The new format will only contain the chord progressions and/or tablature for the song along with notation of what progression/tablature corresponds to what part of the song. Read on for more details.

First off, here is a complete list of the artists in our main section. If there is an artist (or hopefully, artists) that you would like to work on, e-mail your request to tabeditor@christianguitar.ws . Be sure to include your CGR username in your e-mail. Note: You must have been a member of CGR for at least 1 month and have at least 50 posts to participate in this endeavor. After considering the amount of power given to Tab Editors to modify songs in the archives we feel it is necessary to use these requirements. Brent will be overseeing this process and will assign you to the section you request. Once you request a section, Brent will e-mail you with the web address, username, and password you will need in order to begin editing songs. All editing will be done through the website you are given, so there is no need to download each song you wish to edit. More than one person can be assigned to each artist or group, especially for the artists with a large number of songs available on the site. In fact, we encourage more than one person to sign up for any artist they wish. That way we can be sure every song is covered by someone familiar with that song. Each song needs to have ALL of the lyrics removed, but it must still be understandable. This means that you'll probably have to go in and specify that this is the verse, this is the chorus, this is the bridge, etc, as shown in the example here:

Title
Artist

Verse 1:
G D Em C
G D Em C
G D Em C
D

Chorus:
G C D
G C D

Verse 2:
G D Em C
G D Em C
G D Em C
D

Take your time, and do it RIGHT. Also, keep all of the tablature in the songs, but again, be sure to point out what part it's for since the lyrics won't be there any more. Once you are done with an artist, that's all you need to do for them. As new songs come in, I'll make sure that they're formatted correctly.

For those that want to know, I'm 95% sure that this will allow us to start posting Brentwood songs again. They haven't given us an official clearance, but every copyright law I can find says that the lyrics and melody can be copywritten, but chord progressions can NOT. Woo-hoo!

Here is the full list of artists. Obviously, some have more songs than others, so therefore they'll take longer to convert. Also, be sure to test the songs (with your guitar) at least a little bit to make sure they sound right. If you have any questions you can post them here or e-mail the address given above.

Mickey,

Would it be possible to have the first word for a new chord in it? I mean, not all the lyrics, but have the new chord over the word where it changes (and just not any of the words between)?

If not, what about having periods or something to show which words go to the chords?... I saw it in another thread, and it would be better than nothing. It's extremely hard for some beginning guitarists to figure out the timing and rythem of songs even if they have the lyrics, so anything that could help out would be great.

Phil,

I think that's probably legal, but it moves us back into a grey area. If we just flat out remove the lyrics, I know that we're legal. Let's just go with that for now, and once it's done, and we've convinced Brentwood/Vineyard/Integrity that it's legal, we'll look at it again.

IHL,
Mickey

Darrin: I'm not sure that would work out very well. Once you remove the lyrics to the song you must leave the chords/tablature in an understandable format or order and it's hard to do that if you don't know the song. You need to be familiar with the song(s) in order to arrange the chords in logical order and without the lyrics there it would be even harder for even someone who was familiar with the song to figure out what goes where without the guidance of the lyrics there.

Brent - Slight change. When someone starts working on an artist, put their name next to that artist. When that artist has been completely de-lyric-ed then just remove the entry completely. The list will get shorter and shorter, and eventually (hopefully) disappear completely!

IHL,
Mickey

Brent: What I ment is I know the songs and I could take the lyrics off (you just keep the chords in the same relative order/line right and remove the lyrics) but Mickey said he wants us to play them when we are finished, that I probably couldn't do. But I think it wouls still same time is I converted some to the new format.. Let me know what ya think.

You don't NEED to play them all. I'm sure there are songs on here that no one knows... In many cases, you just need to tweak the spacing of the chords and put in a few pieces of text ("chorus", "verse", etc). In other cases, though, it will take a complete re-working of the song, in which case you'll need to be able to play through it to make sure it sounds about right...

IHL,
Mickey

I'm pretty close to finishing the Chris Tomlin section, but I've noticed a couple things in the process. Once you remove the lyrics you find that the 2 or 3 versions of one song are basically the same....what to do with these? Also, some of the songs are just downright wrong....wrong chords, wrong progression, whatever...and once you get rid of the lyrics they just don't make much since...what to do with these as well?

If you (or anyone) find any songs that should be deleted, just send me an e-mail (mickey@christianguitar.ws) and tell me. Be sure to include:

-Artist
-Song Title
-Song ID number (when you are editing the song, it should show up in the address bar. Be sure you get the song ID number, and not the artist ID number.
-Reason for deleting the song ("very wrong", "duplicate chords", etc)

Do all of that, and I'll take care of them.

IHL,
Mickey

It has been brought to my attention that someone (other than Charlie) has been editing tabs in the Steven Curtis Chapman section. This is a reminder (as it said in the e-mail I've sent all who have signed up) that you are to edit tabs ONLY in the section assigned to you. Leave the other tabs to the person(s) assigned to them or to the people who will eventually be assigned to them. Charlie is the ONLY person who should be editing tabs in that section. This is the best organized way to do it and we don't want anyone messing that up. On top of them being out of their assigned section, the tabs were edited quite poorly as well. Whomever is responsible took out the words and left the chords in a jumbled mess right where they were left after deleting the words. PLEASE *stick to the format* shown in Mickey's first post in this thread and we will have everything uniform.
