Open mic worship...

Has anyone ever been to, heard of or been involved in an open mic night of worship? I was thinking of putting together something at our church once a month to get local Christian musicians together. Any feedback would be great.
Thanks.

I haven't heard of it, but that could be interesting. The tough part, as my paranoid self imagines it, would just be if someone went up with either weird or theologically-off songs. But that could be really cool!

I just thought it would be a great way for local, Christian musicians to get to know one another, network, learn, have a good time and worship.

That could be really cool! What kind of facilities do you have to work with?

I go to one and most people who play there know each other and have heard each other play or lead worship one place or another. It's really a good time. Especially when each group allows and/or encourages others to play and sing along. Great time of worship. Can run a little late but I don't mind spending time with God and making music. Set up and tear down is a big hurdle. Having most acts use the same pa and mics is ideal.

We would most likely do it at our church. The pa, etc... already set up. Use our drums. So set up/break down wouldn't be an issue. I would like to have it where groups can get up or different people get to play together, like a regular open mic deal.

Best of luck with it. As a suggestion I'd try to have a few guidelines in place like what songs are ok and what aren't. Also maybe have a sign up sheet to get an idea of how long people will have. And on the sign up sheet maybe a spot for preference of accompaniment by others or not.

We used to go to this monthly event out in LA called the "Lamb Jam", where a lot of local worship leaders and other Christian musicians would meet at a small club or coffee shop and play and jam for hours.
It was a lot of fun as long as one artist or group didn't hog the stage for too long, with the usual limit being 3 songs per.

If you've got the venue and a decent PA and the interest, I say go for it!

Spoke to our pastor and he is excited. He said go for it and to let him know how he can help. We will use our church sanctuary, so all is good. Thanks for the feedback. I used to be involved in an open mic night back in my bar days, so I have some experience there too.

I wouldn't want to bill it so much as worship--but open mic jam or just open mic--but for worship music/musicians, whatever.

Could be a lot of fun.

We've had jam sessions for people on the worship team and to help the sound guys learn stuff.
And we've had them to welcome people who might like to get involved or just want to check it out.

So the open mic could be fun--and you could meet some cool people and learn some new stuff.

Let us know how this goes. I organize and coordinate open mic events here on my campus, and I'm excited to see how an "open mic worship" would go.

We will probably start organizing and get started after the first of the year. I will post back once we get started. Thanks for all the feedback.

Looking forward to it! I could totally see myself stealing that idea for my area if it has a good reception.
