At least like 6 losses are from blown saves... when you're 46 and 55, that's an enormous swing. We'd be tied with the mets. Of course if the bullpen didn't suck as a whole we'd probably be close to 60 wins.

Save is the second most overrated stat.

Well that was certainly a trade deadline...
I don't remember one quite that busy, especially for huge names

Right. The issue is that the Padres have turned around careers for nobodies (Heath Bell) and guys on the decline (Huston Street). There was no reason to buy Kimbrel when we had one of the best bullpens in the league the year prior.

What's the deal with the Cole Hamels deal? I know his contract is longer, but are the Rangers thinking they can get in the picture in 2016? Are the Rangers in now and I just don't follow the AL West?

I don't get that one. At all.

I wasn't talking about "saves" at a stat, but saves as an event. As in... Jim Johnson losing a 2 run lead in the 9th.

So I saw today that Maybin has plummeted back towards his career average. Streaky man. Streaky.

I know. All I'm saying is that having a good bullpen as a whole is way more important than having a good closer. It doesn't matter if you give up the lead in the 7th or 9th. It just matters that you have a bullpen (including closer) that hold leads.

Sure, sure... but it does make a difference that a person has the right mentality as a closer... Every reliever, current and former, that I've ever heard speak on the matter will attest to the fact that knowing that you're "THE GUY" at the end of the game makes it harder to pitch because of the added pressure. Not every guy has the ability to remain calm under pressure, in fact it bothered Jon Smoltz so much that he had to see a psychologist.

I've always wondered if that was a higher level thing. I've always felt relief/closing to be easier. No pressure to conserve energy. Just trust my stuff, throw less than a dozen pitches and go home.
