Installment 5

Sitting in the darkness of his cell, Ernst was troubled. His plan to begin the transformation of the one who would be the Matriarch, the mother who would birth the iron machine that would unite all of the human kind and bring them into the world-monastery, had not proceeded as anticipated.

This had always been the weakness in the great plan, the unforeseen factor in the prophecy — any true lifebeing had a will and could react to changes around them. Lifebeings by their nature resisted transformation.

But the future of the hypernation depended on the success of the plan. Ernst's own future — though he was willing to die for the cause — depended on it. If he did not do something to get the plan back on course, the entire timeline would unravel and the prophecy would be denied. The iron machine would not exist.

After another moment's contemplation, Ernst stood, walked across the bare cell and opened a drawer in the desk. He took out what looked like a simple black box, and -- placing the box on the desk -- rested his hand on top of it. A black, ethereal glow began to emit from the box, and as Ernst's hand rested on it, the glow seemed to creep along his arm and up his neck until it wrapped around his head and crawled into his eyes, ears, nostrils and mouth.

Ernst needed to find an agent closer to the source of the timestream to ensure it existed. Already, the threads of this reality were stretching dangerously thin, and every effort at communicating with those who had come before in the timeline drew from and weakened Ernst's lifeforce.

Merging his consciousness with the great streaming network of zeroes and ones, Ernst searched for the one who could help complete the genesis event. Just as he thought his strength would give out, he found a member of the human kind who could do it. Willing himself to appear in the appropriate user interface in time and space to communicate with the agent, he explained what needed to happen for the good of all.

At last, the user nodded his assent and Ernst released his consciousness back into his body. Stumbling back from the black box, Ernst sat hard in his chair across the room, the exertion leaving him feeling drained. He hoped the sacrifice had been worth it. He believed it had.

Just before Ernst had released his spirit-mind to his correct time and place, the user to whom he had been speaking had leaned forward and taken a long draw on a cigarette. Even through the network, Ernst could smell that it was menthol.

"Don't worry," the user had said, exhaling smoke through his nose, past long, pale, lips. "Dis Mint iz on da job. Gi for all and everybody."

Just a note to the reader: I do not plan, at this point, to delve further into CGR mythology other than the two notable characters now introduced into the story. So don't worry if you weren't here in the wayback days.

This is easily the best thing I've read in a long time. I love it.

I forced Alyssa to read the story and she thought it was awesome.

She kind of disappeared on her computer for a few hours. I had no idea she was making it.

Alyssa's going to give other forums body image issues, because CGR is apparently smokin' hot.

No forum of mine is going out dressed like that! Who gave her the birds and bees talk when she turned 13? Because they clearly missed the "don't dress provocatively talk"!
