Ironically, these principles apply to playing in almost any group setting, not just worship. Play with the group, not against it.

A good and challenging read.

That said, I was slightly amused by the underlying assumption that the electric guitarist is not also the worship leader.

But I'm a martin man when I play acoustic...

Anyway, a lot of the recommendations become redundant if you are also the worship leader. Playing the style you want, is, by definition, playing the style the worship leader wants.

Upon second reading, I found that perhaps the strongest critique that I can take from the article is to be more humble about my stage volume. Regarding being opinionated, I'm probably (in the author's view) allowed to be more opinionated as the worship leader.

A further point on opinions - opinions in and of themselves aren't a bad thing, in my reckoning. Like with so many other things, it's the motive behind the opinion that matters more. If you opinions are directed toward genuine improvement of the worship music / genuine service toward the congregation, then those opinions will be helpful and constructive. Just make sure you offer them with appropriate humility. If your opinions are purely from the perspective of "I like it this way," then maybe those opinions should be kept to yourself.

Sure, sometimes genuinely intended opinions between worship team members will clash, but it's probably better to have a mature discussion about them out in the open rather than letting members of your team keep quiet and grow resentful.
