Anyone play keyboard/piano in a worship band at church?

I do but I'm not very good. I just plonk out straight chords which is really boring and my piano teacher wants to teach me improvisation but I'm kinda resistant coz I'm admittedly stubborn and also don't see how improvisation can be learnt. So yeah. How do you guys get on with it? I love piano, but I really don't like playing at church and I feel I should coz it's about serving God and not about me:/

I used to play keys, and mostly just played the chords to fill out the overall sound a bit. Very occasionally I did more complicated parts, but just the backing chords was usually the most appropriate part for that music team.

Being able to play "better" or more complicated things is good and all, but often it's the simpler playing that works better.

This video has some really great tips on keyboard playing in modern worship music. It is a little lengthy and it's split into 1/3rds between drums, guitar, and keys, but it is worth it to check it out.
