Play Jazz and Funk

I want to play more jazz and funk on my guitar. I know there are differences between these genres but I want to play both of them.
Since I'm not very into these genres I'm not sure with what songs to start. Do you have suggestions? I prefer christian artists but I sadly admit that there are few christian musicians in these genres.

For the jazz I'm looking for chill jazz melodies on guitar. Things like Wes Montgomery or so.
For the funk I'm searching something like the disco-age. I like the funky rhythm guitar in It aint over till its over by Lenny Kravits.

Any crazy suggestions are welcome.

I've been getting into funk a little bit lately too. There's some reasonably good resources on youtube for general advice about funk.

While a bit dated, the rock school videos have some good advice for starting out.

There's also a guy that does pedal demos named justnick, who has quite a few "funk guitar for everyone" videos. I recently used one of his videos to learn the basic riff of Le Freak.

For funk guitar, I'd recommend this book - Rakuten.com - Funk Guitar Bolton, Ross : ISBN 35609

For jazz, this one - The Jazz Theory Book: Mark Levine: 9781883217044: Amazon.com: Books

The MOST important aspect of funk is rhythm, so make sure that you're using a metronome.

Spanky Alford - "The Lord's Prayer" - YouTube
Might be a good place to start...

But seriously. Jazz, funk, you gotta start listening to some good Gospel music.

If I should listen to good Gospel music, what artists do you suggest? Which artists do you consider ''good''?

I'd say the answer is to start learning the songs you like. It sounds like you've already got a good idea of what you want to learn; the best thing to do is to keep listening, and learn those songs you like.

There's tons of good jazz materials out there. I've always liked the Aebersold books. The Barry Galbraith ones are awesome. It is also mandatory that you pick up a Real Book... immediately

Remember too....funk is about feel. You'll notice that many other genres of music will incorporate elements of funk (with the exception of classical of course......but then again, some funky Bach might be interesting ).
