Pray, Pray some more, Pray lots, and Pray with out ceasing. Pray to god that he will take it from you. Be persistent, he will listen. Ask and you shall recieve. Besides that... do what it takes to keep yourself as far as possible away from what is tempting you. turn the other way...take a walk... whatever. Then pray some more. God will help ya.

Sing praise songs, or quote scripture, my youth pastor gave me this verse:
1 John 2:28 And now dear children, continue in Him, so that when He appears, we may be confident and unashamed before Him at His coming.

One that i found: Romans 13:12 The night is almost over, the day is almost here, so let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.

Cool

Best thing that works for me is to go out on the deck with my guitar and praise the Lord! Works all the time when i'm tempted to sin.

Read the Bible every day. If you have the word in you, you'll be stronger, you'll be able to think of good Bible-based reasons not to sin, instead of world-based reasons why it's alright to sin. Pray every day. You cannot have a fulfilling relationship with God without talking to Him. If you have a friend that you know nothing about and never talk to, your relationship will suck. Quote the Bible every day. Even if you just get up in the morning and say "this is the day that the Lord has made, I will rejoice and be glad in it", that's a great step. While the world will give you reason after reason why it is ok to sin, and that the Bible isn't literal, and that Christianity is for whiny losers and overbearing Bible thumpers, remember what Christ has done for you in your life. Remember the Bible, and what it says. Try to figure out your most often temptations and find a Bible verse for them. Get help from your pastor. Pray with others about your temptations. Ask God's forgiveness when you sin. Obviously it isn't always practical in the situation to go out on the deck and play guitar, although that is a great idea when you're at home. But when you're with friends, or in an unfamiliar place, remember to bring in the word of God, and you'll do better than if you're unarmed.
So, to recap, know the Bible, read it, believe it, keep it close to your heart; pray, pray, pray, pray all the time, pray whenever you have a free uninterrupted moment, pray when you're in the bathroom, it's a great time; and quote the Bible, quote it in your mind if you're at school in a class, quote it out loud when it's appropriate. Strive to be like Christ and you'll be ok.

Thumbs up Avoidance

You have to stay away from it. I was in that situation earlier tonight. My roomate asked if I wanted to go to someone else's room with her. She also said they'd be drinking. I mean, that has never held any kind of appeal for me, but you could get hurt at something like that. Also, if people know you won't do a certain thing, they try all the more harder to get you to do it. Just stay away. And if you still come into temptation, GO TO GOD! He'll give you the strength you need!!!!!!

Romans 12:21 "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good."

Good is only truly good when it is of God, so fill your life and mind with good. Stay in the word, stay in prayer, stay in worship, use the gifts you have to serve and glorify God, and just fill your life and mind with so much of God there isn't room for more. Then as Ecclesiastes 4 describes, having friends to help you out helps a lot, good close friends you can be accountable to and call when you are temped, people who have a heart for God and living righteously as you do to keep you in the right mindset.

But most of all know the word of God and take every thought captive to Christ. We read in Galatians that our faith -our beleif and knowledge that something is wrong- is our sheild, but defense alone won't win us the victory, we need to master the sword of the Spirit, the word of God, to overcome temptation. When Jesus was temped He used the word of God to overcome. It's good to know something is wrong, and its good to ask God for help, but we must understand that we only have power and authority over evil as God gives us through His word.

And when we speak that word (and we must speak it, Satan doesnt read our minds) and take claim in it in faith, there is nothing Satan can do. And then to add to this, when we stay in truth and prayer and worship and live righteously, the Spirit of the Lord abides within us and our lives, and evil flees His presence. Then through Matthew 6:22-23, 1 Corinthians 15:33 & Romans 12:9 we see that our surroundings, what we place before our eyes, our company, what we put into our minds affects us greatly. Living righteously isn't just what you do, but what you partake in. It's good to be in the world as a light and witness, but make sure not to become of the world by partaking in and filling your mind with what is evil or holds no worth.

Something that I just found out, it hit me so hard. I have a friend who was talking to me about how he dealt with temptation: Realize how totally awesome and big God is, WAY bigger than your temptations. Once I realized this, I just gave it up to God, and He was like, "Geez, man, finally you just let go and give Me your burdens instead of trying to deal with them yourself! You've been hearing this in church, Pastor Bruce has been saying it forever, finally you believe it and give it up to Me!"

So that pretty much rocked.

Peace,
CHRVH

LOL, know this is the How To board.. but it really means "How to do something musical.."

I am gonna get a mod to move it to the everything christian board, as thats where it belongs.....

but to answer your question, i would say pray...

and one of the main keys to resist temptation is to actually NOT want to do whatever your tempted to do... which comes from a desire to be pure and holy
