Ultimate Commuter Car?

So here's an interesting one. 84 mpg + 6,800 bucks = victory? And it has no erroneous electric/hybrid/whatever technology to act as ballast. Going back to basics shows that light weight and great aerodynamics combined with a minimalist approach to complex technology is a great way to end up with a hugely efficient vehicle that is simple and therefore reliable. They are advertising a 5-star safety rating as well.

Ultra High Mileage Car : Elio Motors

Sure, it looks a little dorky and it's missing a wheel. But for the price, this very well may be my next airport commuting car. It's obviously not a family sedan, but most commuters do so alone anyway. This car seems to accomplish everything the Insight/Smart/ScionIQ set out to do, but it does it about twice as good for half the money.

From what I've read, the motor is nothing special. If they put a sixth gear in it and some direct injection, or better yet.... run camless.... I'd bet you could easily see over 100 mpg. And we haven't even discussed a turbodiesel option yet.

I've long been of the opinion that a car manufacturer could produce a hyper-efficient vehicle for very little money if they would just keep it simple, and utilize the proven technology at hand. This car seems like a pretty solid effort along those lines. Give me direct injection and pneumatically controlled valves, and I'll gladly forego the 500 lbs of batteries and A/C for my butt.

If it had 4 tires I may actually be interested. Price is right, mileage is right, but as much as I like practicality... It's kind of ugly.

I would expect insurance to be lower than typical, given the design, but I could be wrong.

Booyahhhhh.

Do people still say booyah? I think that's the only time I've said it since like 2004.

I wonder if it would require the motorcycle endorsement in Tennessee, not to mention motorcycle insurance.

Most states do not require a motorcycle license to operate the vehicle, a regular driverís license is usually enough. Check with your local Department of Motor Vehicles to be sure.
I'm very sure TX will require it.

Huh. Didn't realize it was classified as a motorcycle. That could change things.

I'll bite... What is wrong with 3 wheels?

You are probably right. Given the low replacement cost, I would expect insurance to cost less than average.

Motorcycle insurance is cheaper than car insurance as a general rule. My old street bike was less than my ancient truck.

Probably. Theoretically it would also require a helmet in some states. The odds of a cop knowing this and pulling you over seem really low, though. It's not like you'd be going very fast, haha.

Probably not, but the bigger question... Does it matter? I'd say no.

There was also an interesting payment plan in which they give you the car for free, then issue you a credit card that triples the price of gas and puts the extra toward your car payment. So it would be like getting a free car that gets 28 mpg, roughly.
