Be Paul McCartney? He used a Höfner 500/1 Bass with certain strings and certain amps... but tone is mostly in the fingers...

Paul McCartney's bass tone varies from song to song as he was noted for using a few different basses (the Hofner Viola being most famous, but he also used a P-Bass and a Rickenbacker IIRC).

That being said, when I feel like I'm trying to dial in that sort of tone, I go for an emphasis in the low/low-mids and usually end up rolling the tone knob on the bass itself.

I have a Hofner B bass, the model inspired by Paul himself. It sounds really good, but to get his tome dead on, you need to buy some Paul McCartney bass strings. Be prepared to dish out $100.00. These strings will make the difference

There's a company that makes signature Paul strings? I had no idea.

That's funny because Paul probably doesn't even know what strings he uses. Paul McCartney interview with Tony Bacon

He technically has an endorsement with Ernie Ball but I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that he, like hundreds of artists with string endorsements don't actually use them, they just use whatever they like and their endorsements are just what their publicist could get them.

FWIW, I eventually googled it and found nothing.

Through the years, 1964 - 2013, Sir Paul has gone through countless gear changes so nailing his tone gearwise would be nearly impossible unless you were to select one era. One thing that has always remained the same was his use of a pick. Find what gauge he uses and there's a starting point for you.

ok,you are correct, with every different bass the tone is different, i do know the different basses he uses, and to be more specific i guess i want to go with the tone from the songs he uses the rick on, example "rain" thats the tone i'm trying to find and capture
