New Band Bass...

Well, the band mate has been wanting to learn bass and we had a few bones in the band fund so one thing led to craigslist and bing bang doodle: New band bass!

It's one of those old Kay's. Nothing too special but this thing is absolutely flawless!

I know nothing about basses or Kay, but it looks cool and if you like it... then awesome!

It's not as short as my Hoffner, but a little shorter than a P-bass. Really need to change the strings (plastic coated strings... Ewww...).

Hmm...32" scale...interesting.

The strings look like DR Blacks in the picture, are they something else?

No idea, all I know is that they're covered in this plastic stuff and I don't like it. Gonna toss on some regular flats on 'em.

If you're just planing on junking them, would you mind throwing them in an envelope and sending them out my way? I can cover shipping. Let me know.

I tried to PM this to you, but it says your box is full.

Bummer.

It does look like the DR Black Beauties are coated...
DR Strings Black Beauties Guitar Strings at zZounds

I've never used coated bass strings before. I just picked up some Elixir Nanos for one of my acoustics, but only because it sits out all of the time and the strings go to crap pretty fast from just the typical salinity in the air combined with dust and what not.

And yeah...I've never seen an instrument from that era in such good condition. Wild

kinda late to the party but I use DR blacks on my Hohner 5-string neck thru bass and I absolutely love them. They are coated but not with a plastic. They almost look painted or powdercoated when you look at them up close. It definitely doesnt look like any plastic. They sound great and were worth the money just for the looks. One thing though--if you play with a pick you will wear off some of the coating over time. I have had these on my bass for over 6 months and I play every week with no issues.
