Guitar tones you absolutely hate

Dunno if we've had a thread like this before, or if we should, or if this should be in effects or amps or something, but yeah...

What are some tones that just make you cringe when you hear them?

Couple of examples

That "Quacky" Bridge/Neck 80s Strat Tone:
Robert Plant - Big Log - YouTube

Acoustic/Electric Guitars (when used in the studio, live is acceptable):
chet atkins and tommy emmanuel part 1.mpg - YouTube

Pretty much if it quacks and it ain't a duck, I don't dig it.

I approve of this thread. Nothing to add yet, but I'll be listening.

That cheap, tinny, sort of compressed sound that passes for a good acoustic guitar tone these days. I loathe it.

Agreed. I'd take a semi decent clean electric sound over most acoustic pickups any day.

I also don't like the sound of an amp that's been throttled too much. It sounds somewhat empty and lacking in range. However, my cringing there is more sympathetic toward the guitarist, because of what they are missing out on.

A guy at my church plays with a phaser/wah combination of pedals, and it sounds like a spaceship is about to land in the sanctuary. Absolutely terrible sounding.

I also despise the sound of ovations, either plugged in or not. Just weak and yucky. Here is an example:

I know it's Bob Marley and hip and everything, but the guitar tone is just lacking.

Mine, about 85% of the time.

the first barre chord of the set

I get so nervous about hitting the first barre chord of a set. When it's on, it makes for a great set. When it's cold on stage, and I miss it, all the vocalists give me that "What the heck was that" look. Usually instead of playing a desired Bm it ends up being F#m7 ish.

Pantera and most modern "Metalz" tone where the distortion is so high that it kills the tone.

I don't like it when a band that is not Pearl Jam tries to do a Pearl Jam wah solo.

I don't like bands who aren't Pearl Jam try to do anything Pearl Jam, including that band that now calls themselves Pearl Jam after the real Pearl Jam all died in a plane crash in the late 90s.

So much truth in this thread.

I had an absolutely amazing pickup in my Larrivee, an L.R. Baggs I-Beam. It sounded so true. It was still a pickup, but it was an amazing one. When it died, the music director of our former church had it replaced with what was supposedly a much improved product. It was whatever L.R. Baggs was peddling in 2009. The music store also told me how many problems they'd had with the I-Beam, and I must have just gotten an exceptional one, but they wouldn't recommend putting another in. Plus, this new doohickey had in-the-soundhole volume and tone controls, which was a nice improvement (my I-Beam had nothing).

Well, the new and improved L.R. Baggs sounds like an acoustic guitar pickup, not a guitar. I was so sad.

On a recording, if you can't hear string noise from the attack of the pick and the movement of the fingers, you have to ask, "Why didn't they just mic the stupid guitar?!"

Another tone (or lack thereof) that I hate, but from a different instrument:

Bass that's been turned up too loud, to the point that all it is is a flubby rumble with little or no note definition. I'd much rather quieter bass that lets you hear some detail. Also, when the bass is cranked like this, you generally can't hear the guitar, so it takes away from the guitarists tone too.

Dude...I LOVE that tone!
It's one of the songs/tones that convinced me to get a Strat.

A tone that I dislike: the Rockman.
That is all.

Our main guitarist at Church uses an Ovation and I love the sound in any situation. (Well, acoustic (amp'd, unplugged) situation. I'm not sure how good it would be for, say, punk rock )

But I guess this thread is more personal taste than anything. :P

A likely guess. Sometimes I wonder why my tone preferences differ from other people's, and I wonder how much of it is due to hearing. For instance, a lot of people like more treble in their guitar tone than I do. My hearing is still pretty sensitive to high frequencies. Maybe other people require more treble to hear the same tone I like to hear.
