I'm not sure I understand the thread title. Do you mean "how do I tell the differences between different examples of the gibson es 335 model" or "how do I tell the difference between a gibson es 335 and other guitar models?"

As to what a given guitar is worth, you could look at a few websites to see how much they sell for, but ultimately it's worth what you're prepared to pay for it.

Strictly speaking, there are not different types of ES-335's, but over the years Gibson has offered several different models under the "ES" (Electric Spanish) moniker.

Gibson's ES Series

Epiphone also offers versions of some of these models including the "Dot" (ES-335), and their recent ES-339 (similar to the 335, but with a smaller body).

I have a 1996 tobacco burts that I bought for $1500 I think. I've seen the same guitar sell for $2500+. I would think $1500 to $2000 is a fair, used value for any Gibson ES-335.

You know...I may be wrong. They may NOT make a 335 Standard making all of them Custom. I'm really not sure.

I think that most (all?) of the 335s on the market for the last decade or so are "Custom Shop" branded.

I believe Custom Shop instruments have a different serial number schema. Some begin with a CS. There is also usually a little custom shop gold logo usually.

I know at some points there were standard 335s as well.

Here are a few things that might help narrow down which model 335 it is.

Does the guitar have a plain or figured top?
Is the hardwear Chrome or Gold?
Does it have a Bigsby Tremlo?
Does it have Dot or some other style of fret marker?
Does the heastock have the crawn inlay or Split diamond(same as on a Les Paul Custom)?
What color/type of binding does the body have?

There are other variations such as EMG or Gibson: Dirty Fingers pickups, Ebony fretboard and 345s and 355s with Varitone switches. All of the 335 I've look at online are in the $1,500 and up price range with a few exceptions being a little less. I hope this may be of some help.
