FWIW, those import box switches...I hate them with a passion.

It's done for now. Sounds really good. The neck position is just smooth and very powerful. The bridge position is still twangy but doesn't drive the highs through your skull. I'm going to say it's very much more like a 50's sound than a modern tone. The volume control still doesn't have a great deal of sweep but I don't know if that's the pickups or my wiring.

The biggest change is shimming the neck. I have the bridge raised quite a bit now and it's intonated nicely. It plays much more softly now. The shim stock I used is just a tad bit too thick so the next time I change strings I'll probably adjust everything again.

And the Guitar Fetish "Wilkinson" locking tuners. Very nice. I'd use them again any time. They hold like the old-school split shafts but are easier to string.

The volume sweep thing is possibly the result of using a linear pot instead of a logarithmic one.

Yeah, using the wrong tapered pot will cause the volume to seem all bunched up on one end of turn.

That's probably the case. I'm going to work with it a while before I change it out. I will say those pots are great for tone.

ETA: I'm going to say this one is case closed. One of my boys had jacked around with my Roland practice amp and had the Power Squeezer turned on and that was killing my volume. When I plugged into my Cube 30 I immediately noticed a change. The volume pot has a full and quite smooth sweep. The tone doesn't have that annoying ice pick in the ear thing anymore. It's got plenty of highs for me but it's more controlled now. I can't wait to use it with the band. That's a problem because I'm supposed to knock off for a couple of weeks to recharge.

The SX project is complete. Now I'm off to start thinking about a custom build. The first step will be router templates for a Tele body that uses Les Paul style back routing.
