Chevron to appeal $8.6 billion ruling against it in Ecuador

The Facts

Now, I doubt many of you even know about this issue, but I saw this today and was intrigued. Having been in the area of the Amazon affected by then-Texaco (now owned by Chevron) and talked to residents of the area, this seems to me to be a good ruling. I've asked some of my Ecuadorian friends what they think, and I'll post their thoughts as well.

I'd be interested to see if anyone here has any thoughts or ideas on the issue.

This is interesting...had no idea about this. First thought is that I wonder how much of this is Chevron's fault and how much is the lax standards in Ecuador. But that's a completely uneducated thought...I really have no idea...seems like there's blame to pass around.

Reclamation money? Sure. Oil companies in my province are forced to set aside money to restore the land when they are done.

Yeah, reclamation sounds about right. An Ecuadorian friend I talked to is on board with this for sure because, according to him, (translated from Spanish) they didn't have control of their operations in regards to the environment, which resulted in heavy devastation. I'd be interested to see how this plays out, but I feel like they should have to pay reclamation for damages done. It is quite interesting to me (and I wonder if it's corruption or just a statement) that the fine is more than doubled if they don't make a public apology.
