A Song of Ice and Fire series

I just finished A Game of Thrones a few nights ago, and wondered if anyone else had read this series by George RR Martin?

I borrowed the first book from my sister after hearing practically everyone raving about these books. I knew HBO had made a miniseries about them that was winning awards, so I decided to see what all the hype was about.

I thought the first book was very well written. I liked the detail put into the characters (I couldn't find a single character who was 100% good, or 100% bad (OK, except maybe Cersei Lannister), the plot is complex, the battle scenes realistic (OK, as realistic as fantasy gets). However, this is definitely not a series for kids, the faint of heart, or people who object to violence, killing of main characters, or graphic sex scenes. Definitely high fantasy for grownups.

That being said, I did enjoy the first book and definitely plan on reading the others.

Anyone else read these books? What are your thoughts? Is this going to be another WoT where I get a few books in and then want to stab my eyes out from how slow the pace becomes?

i think i may have read 2 or 3 of them. i remember reading at least one in my mid-teens.

i ultimately stopped reading them because of the graphic sex content, but i feel like i remember the books getting kind of soap opera-y.

I liked the first couple but the story takes a major turn that just really didn't do it for me and I lost interest. The graphic sex parts got excessive too.

ive just finished the 5th one. and its cool, some are the story lines are coming back together. the author is not afraid to kill off main characters which is great. yeah they do get a bit crude but i enjoy the over all story line.

It's funny how few of the main characters from earlier in the series survive. He definitely is not afraid to kill off characters, that's for sure.

I'm about halfway through book 5 at this point

I haven't seen the TV series because I don't get HBO and don't want to pay for the site subscription to watch full episodes (too bad it's not on Netflix!)...but I know I want to watch it at some point

I want to read these but I don't have time right now. I've seen some of the show though, and I love Tyrion. Hope he isn't dead in the books. Ha.
