FWIW, I have designs on a 13 String Touch Guitar/Bass. Actually, I made a mock-up of it as a proof of concept.

Mind sharing some designs or pics? An 8 or 10 string touch style instrument is on my future build list (most likely in the vein of a Warr guitar). PM is fine if you don't want to share publicly.

Imagine a Warr Strat or a Warr P-Bass. I'll see about pics. Some were taken at one of my guitar building club meetings. Also, I think I might have access to a decent camera phone.

You don't need a 5 string, but these days 5 string is all I play....mainly because I got tired of the keyboard player being able to play lower notes than me.

The main draw for the 5 string, for me, is the ability to walk up to notes on the E string instead of always having to walk down. I don't play below D very often, but I use the B string lot for the notes above D. For example, when playing root notes on the E string, say A, for example, I can now play the fifth both above and below the root.
