okay, well my guess is the same issue actually.

The linux way would probably be a good way if you intend to reformat it later. The MFT is probably hosed.

So you agree with Cam to put linux on a cd and try to boot it from that? Could I boot it from a different EHDD (I'd have to go out and buy a cd)

I would buy the cd. A live cd offers the ability to not alter your hdd more than most thumbdrive installs. However, if linux does not work, there is another option, but it is tricky and doesn't always work.

If you have a USB flash drive I think you can use that instead of a live CD if you don't have a blank CD-R.

In my situation, the HD was powered not by USB but from a separate power cable. There was a problem with the power supply to the enclosure so the disk wasn't getting any power. Doesn't really matter though, since the drive does show up on his computer so this is not the issue.

I had this happen a few months ago to an external hdd, I was stupid enough to plug it into a pogoplug to try doing a san on the cheap. big big mistake, never ever use a pogoplug.

anyhow, mine was showing up as unreadable RAW. I used the Ultimate Boot CD and was able to get 100% of everything back. it even pulled the tables and recreated the folder structure without a problem. the other tool I had tried prior to UBCD could only pull raw files off, named 001.jpg, 002.jpg, etc. which sucks.

Ok I've given up on that drive. Now I bought 2 new EHDDs, a seagate and a wd. So now I will mirror those drives so I won't lose anything else.
