Great, thanks! You've been a lot of help. I hope you don't mind if I ask more stupid questions when I get them

| Here's another question. What do you say in your head when counting patterns like that one with sixteenth beats? When you come to the skipped beats, do you still count them as if they weren't skipped, do you say "skip", or maybe something totally different? I'm just trying to figure out how to differentiate between the skipped and non-skipped and yet still keep count properly.

| The idea is to keep counting, I how ever, suck at doing that, it just takes practice. |

| The only stupid quation is the one you don't ask. I reckon you've* helped at least another ten guys by not being embarrassed to ask...
*along, of course, with the splendid chaps who took the time and trouble to answer

Skip saying them at all if you are trying to work out how the rhythms sound in your head.
One... Two. A Three E And, Four, And A
Check out how this guy counts the rhythms. Not a guitar tut, just general reading music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7R5IJ...e_gdata_player

| Yeah, he's counting it "wrong", he's counting his sixteenth notes as eighth notes. Basically, he's counting in doubletime. |

Here's my problem. I've been trying to teach myself for over a year and basically all I've really accomplished is I'm able to play most of the common chords including some barre chords. And that's all I really know.
I can I understand counting and strumming in theory and I can even play some 8th note patterns where you have to skip some beats, but actually doing it playing it with a song where I need to make chord changes at different parts in the pattern is a different story.
I just feel like I'm spinning my wheels and not getting anywhere. I spend more time on you tube just trying figure stuff out than actually playing. I don't have any structured method that I'm working off of. So, I really don't know what to work on next. I just try to learn to play individual songs but I'm just not getting anywhere.
What should I do. I feel like I need some sort of teaching method. I'm hoping some of you all will come along and tell me what I need, whether it's some sort of online lessons, a dvd course or take lessons from an actual teacher.

| You can't buy a road map until you know where you want to go. Where do you want your music to take you? What's in your head trying to get out? (That's a risky question some times but I ask anyway.)
As far as lessons go, that's a good idea. Once you know enough to have fun then you can buckle down and really learn how a guitar works. It's what I did.
"D G
Mel Bay, Mel Bay, we just wanna say
D A D
We wouldn't know what we're doin, if you hadn't shown the way
D G
Mel Bay, Mel Bay, everytime we play,
D A7 D
we're always thinking of you, and hope you have a nice day..." |
