I have found twenties, fifties, and (only once) a hundred. I never pocketed the money and always looked to find the person who dropped it.

The downside is, if you find a $100 in a parking lot and you go to the customer service desk, you're never guaranteed that the person behind the desk isn't going to pocket the money themselves. In those cases, I try to make sure there are multiple witnesses to improve the chances that the loss/find is properly documented.

As for coinage, if I see someone drop their money, I'll pick it up and give it to them, even if they didn't notice that they dropped it. if it's a coin or two and no evidence indicating to whom it may belong, I generally leave it...I have issues with germs.

#8 - Thou shalt not steal.

There's no mention of an amount there. I know, I know, there are more stipulations in the levitical laws, but I'm a purist and like to keep it simple. If it's not mine, I don't take it. I use the same logic when I'm given too much in change. I've gone back over two cents once. The lady behind the register looked at me like I was nuts, but I knew I had done the right thing. I suppose it's in the way I was raised, but with all I've gone through in life, the one thing I can safely say I've never compromised is my integrity.

And if you are on a bike ride several miles from the last human you have seen and see 20s blowing past...

Just curious, because that actually happened to me. And for the record, they were pretty beat, as if they had been blowing around for some time.

It would depend on where I find it, how I find it--that sort of thing--normally it's coins, and not much.

When I was a kid I found a $20 bill on a sidewalk, and asked the people whose house I found it in front of if they lost any money--they hadn't.

Let's face it--sometimes you won't be able to tell whose it is--if it bothers you--give it to charity.
If you can find out whose it is--return it.

I've never been in that situation. I'd probably report it to the local authorities, especially if it was a large amount.

Heck, I'm pathetic enough that I took a floor mat (one of those nice rubberized entry mats with the carpeting on top) I found in the middle of the road to the town office to check to make sure I didn't need to report it. they said keep it, so it sits on my back porch awaiting muddy boots

I'm not judging anyone else for their actions, just saying what I'd do in the situation. My conscience was given the rigorous training of being a Baptist preacher's kid in the 70's and 80's. It can be downright irritating at times.

When we first got together I used to find money in the washer or dryer from time to time. I usually gave it back and then teased my hubby for not emptying his pockets before throwing his clothes in the laundry. Four kids and almost 20 years later I am praying to find change in the wash!

If I see someone drop money I'll make sure to return it. But I have kept money I found too.
