And while I think I understand what he is saying here, the allegations are so severe and widespread that you can't really try to err on the side of caution:

“I didn’t know which way to go … And rather than get in there and make a mistake,”

most likely someone reported the news from an unofficial source ie. a doctor or nurse at the hospital that wasn't authorized for release yet.
