You're having a rhombus/rectangle issue there. Linux has some relative closeness to UNIX because that's where it's derived from, and the Mach kernel that OSX comes from is based on one of the many flavors of UNIX.
In any case, back in the day I was running red hat most places that I wanted something usable, and ubuntu didn't exist. I tried ubuntu a while back but frankly comparing it to Win7, meh would be an understatement.
I really liked the way apt-get worked with Debian and such, but is that even getting updated anymore?

Frankly, the OS that's the most difficult to deal with from the CLI for me is OSX, but I think that part of it is intentional obfuscation. I use with Windows powershell environment for a ton of tasks on a daily basis.
